want to get started
« on: March 30, 2004, 09:04:55 AM »
Ok, this thing has got me very interested.

I have been reloading for just over ten years and want to try my hand in this long range stuff.  Where to begin?

What will be the basic (lower cost- need to get it approved by wife) equipment needed?  Scoped or non-scoped?  I'd prefer the scoped class but would be willing to try the clean version.

I live just outside Detroit, Mi and there is a 1000 yard range very close so it would be something I could do often.

Fire away...as any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Josh   :sniper:
My wife once made the mistake of telling me "all of your guns look alike"...No, I've had this gun for a long time! LOL

There are 1000 yd matches at Camp Perry every year in August. The cheapest way is in Service Rifle. A $500 CMP Garand will get you started. You need a shooting mat, spotting scope,Some good match ammo,& eye & ear protection. You can load 168 HPBT Match-kings by Sierra in 30-06 cases with 46gr. of IMR 4895 & be ready to go.
Oh yeah,a surplus Marine Corp Shooting Jacket ($50) will be a big help.
Bolt guns for this match are much, much higher. And good optics are $500 minimum for the rifle. Peep sights will be cheaper & they are easier to use. None of these are in the same class. Scoped rifles don't compete against Peep sights. And Service rifles are also in a class by themselves.
Holler back & give a little more detail about just what you want to try & we'll try to answer you with some decent info.
