What does everone think about taking a factory standard 10/22 and putting on a synth. stock and bull barrel??  Is it worth it?  Thanks and Good shooting! :D

They are great little rifles as they come, However they take to mods like a duck takes to water. The extended mag release is one of my favorite things to do to them thou. 8)

Definatly worth it !!
With a good bull barrel they will shoot .5" group's all day.
I'd recommend a Green Mountian barrel about $85.oo
Hogue Make's a fine syn. Stock about $80.oo
The barrel and stock switch take's about 20 minute's with one hex head wrench.

Can we start this string over again?
I have a standard 10/22 w/blued barrel.  It has had nothing done to it except for the gunsmith taking a few burrs off the slide release (because I couldn't get it closed).
I have an inexpensive 4X Tasco scope mounted in the receiver V-grooves and it shoots quite well for range plinking using Remington Thunderbolt longrifle 22rf ammo.....never had a mis-fire or jamb.

Questions:
If/when I start to customize this 10/22, where do I begin first and can you walk me through a progression of recommended after-market up-grades?
I know it could use a better trigger as it is now!
Is there a book I need before rebuilding, so that I don't get in trouble fumbling around without someone watching over my shoulder?

I would install a standard Weaver base (T10, if I remember right) to allow the use of one inch rings. I just don't like the provided dovetail arrangement.

I had a Butler Creek barrel for awhile; it just didn't impress me very much and it made the gun too heavy for my taste. I also used a Hogue
armored stock with the .920 barrel channel.

If I had to do it all over again, I would try one of the carbon fiber barrels.
One of those plus a Butler Creek lightweight stock will get you a gun weighing less than 6 lbs with a compact scope (something along the lines of the Weaver 2-7x32 rimfire scope), plus the barrel has been tested by shooting 500 rounds of .22 LR in under 20 minutes. The carbon barrel will shed heat rapidly.

This to me would translate to better accuracy over extended shooting of groups.

I would also look at installing an aftermarket trigger assembly, along the lines of Power Custom or Vohlquortson. Get all your parts pre-fitted into one package so all that should be done is to drop it into the receiver.

Thank you for your thoughts particularly about barrels and stocks.  I was  wondering what my base line accuracy is with the std. barrel, trigger (uh) and scope setup?  I understand parts are available to rebuild triggers but I am hesitant to tear into the job????

This is how I would do it.
Trigger replacement your preferance, Butler Creek is inexpensive and works good.
 Barrel change, Green Mountain 20" Bull, blued or stainless your preferance. this is a .920 Diameter and will require the barrel channel opened up or a new stock. Boydes are great and inexpensive, also I hear Hogue is very good. Volquartsen extracter and a longer mag. release.
Also as stated before a Weaver scope mount for 1" ring's.
All this can be done with a screw driver and a hex wrench.
Cost is about $200.00

I have 5 10/22's(one for every member of my family) and 2 77/22's and all have 20 inch heavy target barrels from Green mountain on them except for one 10/22(mine) and my 77/22 magnum.  Both of them wear 22 inch running boar barrels from Green Mountain.  As stated the extended magazine release is a good investment along with a good stock made for man sized shooters.  If you like synthetic stocks then the Hogue is a excellent pick but for us wood lovers try the stocks from Royal Arms(these are on all of my 10/22's).  I love to make a great rimfire even better with after market parts and the best part is how easy they are to work on.  Go to http://www.outdoorguides.com/outdoor/rug1022.htm and check out what they have to offer.  Lawdog

I did what you are thinking of doing. First I visited lots of 10/22 sites. One must visit site is www.rimfirecentral.com/. Then I bought a book and video from Clark Custom Guns. I got a Hogue over molded stock, a Volquartsen TG 2000, a Green Mountain .920 20’’ barrel and mounted a Burris 8X32 R/A on it. What I had when I was finished was a first class squirrel getter. It isn’t light anymore but it is rock steady on target and will reach way out there. I really like shooting it just for fun to “kill” water filled soda bottles but it is a real pleasure when squirrel season starts..

Gotta agree with crawfish, go hang out at Rimfire central for a bit.  Chances are you'll find answers to all your questions w/o even posting.  there's alot of helpful info and a great deal of "know" over there.

Ive just got to ask.........how is the gun still a 10/22 if you take all the factory parts off and put what you want on??  I mean if you change the magzine release, trigger, barrel, and stock, what else is there?? THE RECIEVER??!!

I dont really still consider that gun to still be a Ruger 10/22.......thats a gun that has just been completely customized to what you want (so it shouldnt have a model number)

Can yall explain, ur reasoning?

We do it for the same reason that anyone does to make something better than it is.  Why do you put a scope on your rifle?  Most cases they don't come from the factory with them.  Why do hunters/shooters bed the actions on their rifles?  The factory most times doesn't do it so why is it needed?  By changing the short barrel on a 10/22(or even the 77/22) you do it to improve the rifle.  Updating the trigger or magazine release doesn't change what the rifle is.  Neither does changing a stock that is too short for one that fits change what the rifle is.  Does changing all this make it a custom rifle?  Maybe so but it still doesn't change what it is, only improves it.  Factories would go broke quick if they tried to manufacture firearms that fit each and everyone of us.  Just to many body types and opinions out there to make if feasible.  Why try to make do with a factory rifle when changing a few things turns the rifle into what you want?  Lawdog

With any trip it is always good to know your final destination.  What exactly do you plan to do with the gun?  Knowing that will help greatly with the answers.

:D  new to this forum, well the best trigger for the 10/22 is the kidd trigger. & my trigger job is 2nd.  I do some different work than the drop in stuff. my mods help the vq2000 too. you can look me up @ rimfirecentral.com thanks todd
