You can put a scope on it, but an aperture rear sight also works well.

Be sure and order one that will fit your rifle. Older models are drilled and tapped on the side for a receiver sight, newer ones are not.

There are sights made now which fit the holes drilled and tapped for a scope base if you have the newer version

Could you try going to Williams Fire Sights?  Green in back, red in front.  That's what I use and I like em pretty much.  Hope this helps.

I took some of that fancy glowing fingernail polish and tipped the front sight and it is great if you like the ones that it came with as I do.Almost like a firesite for 99 cents.

My 1895 CB .45-70 shoots so good I'm gonna put hooded blade front and  long range vernier tang sights on it!

Leupold 1x4 20mm scope.
Have you hugged your 45-70 lately?

dog -

When I got my first Marlin I had the same problem.  The solution I went with is the following:

Williams FireSight front bead.  Settles right down into the rear notch, highly visible, works great.

Marlin "cut-out" front hood.  About $5 delivered from Marlin.  The cut-out allows light to hit the FireSight, yet still protects it.  Otherwise you need to remove the hood for best results with the FireSight.

Warne "Maxima" Quick Detach bases and rings.  Allows me to shoot glass or iron as I choose.

Leupold VXII 2-7x33 scope.  Relatively compact, still looks good when mounted.

Dog,
Here's another one. My guide gun I have a Leupold 1x4 on. But my 38/55 I replaced the front sight with a Green Fire Sight. the reason for the green is that in low light you can see green longer than you can red in the color spectrum. I removed the rear sight and put a Williams Receiver sight on it.

bid medicine, or anyone else out there who has replaced thier issue Buff Classic or 38/55 peep sight and has it lying around, would you be willing to sell it (cheaply?) for my new project/experiment short barrelled .280 woods rifle I'm trying to build up? I have a .22 Hornet high front sight and a Williams Guide open sight I am trying on it now but think the peep sight would work better....<><....

The reason I put a red bead in front and green ones in back is to prevent confusion.  In night shooting (not really hunting situations like we're talking here) with all THREE dots being green, it's entirely possible to get the front dot off to the side so that it appears to be one of the back dots.  Then your muzzle is pointed off to an angle.
