Anyone use a TCR-83 or 87
« on: March 31, 2004, 06:16:48 AM »
Does anyone out there use a TCR for hunting large game.  I own one, and I have used it to take Moose and Caribou, with the 30-06 barrel.  My wife gave me a .338 Win Mag barrel just before TC dropped production on them.  I've never shot this combo.  The barrel does not have a muzzle brake.  Wondering how it will shoot, especially recoil.  Been using the gun this winter with the .243 barrel, love those set triggers, real sweet.  Thinking about using it on a 14 day float trip in the Brooks range in September.

I have one with .30-06 and a .223 barrels.  Love the feel, but sometimes get nervous about scratching it if I take it out hunting. Besides, I usually end up hunting in a shotgun only zone. The '06 has acounted for a nice hog the one time I had it out. I have been trying to trade off the .223 barrel for another caliber, but haven't connected with anyone yet.

Sourdough, bull,

How do you find the safety to work for you?  I was going to get one this year, I found a great looking 87 in 45-70. But, as I played with it in the store, I found that the safety took both hands to work.  You had to pull back on a little button then push at the same time to the side.  I tried different ways to work but couldn't  come up with anything better to do.  I thought that maybe the first button might be able to be pinned back so all you had was the sideways movement to make, but ended up buying a Handirifle instead.

Just wondering if you've found anyway better to work the safety.  If so maybe I'll look into one again.  I love the set triggers too.

I use my TCR83 in .30/06 for deer in PA. Mine will shoot certain handloads into .835 in groups on one of my good days. Have taken several deer all with just the one shot.I have no problem with the safety,I press  with my forefinger and push with my thumb. It sounds like the 87 might work a bit differently.Sometimes I'm tempted not to use the safety on stand because the unset trigger is so heavy that it takes a concerted effort to touch one off that way but  common sense overcomes me and I use the safety.A little practice with the safety motions helped too. Wish T/C stillmade them or at least started barrel production again after the fire.

I don't particulerly like the safety, and sometimes the fact that it is hammerless.  But the safety works once you get used to it.  Well I shot the .338 barrel today, not as bad as I expected.  No worse than my old Ruger M-77.  Not near as bad as my new Ruger Mark II.  Today all I did was get it on the paper, since I mounted the scope last night.  Friday I will shoot for groupings.  I'll let you know how it does.
