Back to the drawing board!  The bracket loads were shooting high so I didn't actually get any "groups" out of them.  What was visible on the shots indicated a larger group than 16.5 gr. gave.  If it doesn't rain me out, I'll try 16.4 gr and 16.6 gr with the 180 XTP tomorrow.  I need to hurry up and get this load settled, I only have 27 bullets left!

I checked out 15.5 gr of H4227 with the 200 gr Rem PSP and got a 2" group with it.  I bracketed that load with 15.0 gr and 16.0 gr to see what happens on the group size. maybe tomorrow.  I need to hurry even more on this one, there's only 20 of them left!

New groups from today posted here.

16.5 4227/180xtp just may be the one Paul...but looks like your trying all the possibilities...If I had my stuff with me I'd send ya some more bullets...then on the other hand if I had my stuff ...I'd be out banging away!    Have fun!

Well, it rained all day Monday and I was doing my duty as an election judge all day today.  I need to check out some .223 reduced loads also.  If they work out, I'll start a new thread on "reduced loads".

The 16.5 gr load of IMR 4227 opened up the group to 7", so I'm going to back up and try 16.1 gr with the 200 gr Rem PSP.

Deadeye,

You should be glad you're in Bay City instead of Baytown!  I think my wife has a cousin around Bay City.  Rice farmer.
I grew up in that part of the world, Freeport/Lake Jackson and my wife grew up in Angleton.  There isn't a wrinkle in the land, except for a few salt domes!

I've shoveled more of that stuff to the sides of a silo than I care to remember! I did it for 10 dollars a day too!! 7 days a week till the crop was in....Had more money than I could spend!!! haha Livin at home and gas was .25 cents a gallon...what more could a guy in High school want?! (guess I better not answer that! :-) ) That gal is the district Judge today!!  LOL I still need to get ahold of her to ask if any of her dads brothers or kids still has any land I can bang away on...it used to be great!! I used to have alot of choices...he had 4 brothers who had a bunch of kids...they all raised cattle ,rice ,maze ,St.Augustine grass or cotton... I felt like I had access to all of south Texas when I was in High School... Heck I might even know your wifes kin...

Deadeye,

Nothing to be proud of yet on these .360 loads.

The rest of the acount is here.
http://forums.handloads.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=1061&PN=1&get=last#18982

You will notice in the account that I talk about relieving more material out of the forearm.  I think the inconsistant pressure on the right side of the barrel  is part of the problem I'm having.  The group I posted above was the same load I shot the other day at 1 1/2".

Hummmm!  finnicky little sucker isn't it!  Are you resting the rifle on the pivot point or on the forearm? If at the pivot point how bout trying a group using the same loads and leave the forearm off completely? At least that might let you know if the forearm is the problem....corse I shoot a rifle holding on to the forearm don't know about everyone else :? ....LOL

Deadeye,

I'm resting the gun just ahead of the trigger guard.

2" was about as good as I could do today.  It's posted here:

I suppose this is what we have been looking for at 100 yards!

I was resting on the forearm under the screw, but I have relieved more material out of the forearm to get enough clearance on the right side.  I didn't use sand paper, I used a rat tail file and a pocket knife!

I'll load a few more of this 800X load tonight and see if this group was just a fluke.

Now that IS what we're looking for and especially at 100 yards!  800X huh? Never tried any of that...was that your first try with that powder Paul?

Deadeye,

I had tried 800X once at 10.0 gr and I believe it was a 2" group.  I doubt that it is going to chrono very fast, but I was looking for something that would hit the mark on a pretty consistant basis.  180 gr doesn't have to go real fast anyway!

I have 9.0 gr loaded in a .357 case with a CCI 400 and 158 XTP/HP.  We'll see what that will do as a kind of comparison.  Maybe I should have loaded the 180's in it, but I can always try that if the gun survives this load!

800X is a large flake powder that is a little faster than SR 4756 and a little slower than Herco.  The large flake may contribute to consistant ignition sort of like Blue Dot is doing in the rifle calibers I'm loading.

This 11.0 gr load is cratering the primers just a little and may end up being too hot when the weather gets a little warmer.

Ran a few through the chrony today using the 22" Handi rifle.

10.0 gr Blue Dot, .357 Mag brass, 180 XTP/HP, CCI 400 at 15' loaded at the bottom cannelure (this load was too long for my Security Six cylinder)
1275 fps
1339 fps
1359 fps
1396 fps
1359 fps
1345.6 average

11.0 gr 800X, .360 DW brass, 180 XTP/HP, CCI 400 loaded at the top cannelure
1632 fps
1645 fps
1649 fps
1642 average

I found the POI changing with the rest position, by a lot! With the reat at the front of the forearm, it was shooting 6" low. Thinking this was the norm, I raised the scope 5" before I noticed what I was doing with the rest. When I moved the rest to the forearm screw, it was shooting 5" high! I guess I should have left the scope alone and just changed the resting point. Oh well.

That POI change is incredible!  Never seen anything like that.  Wonder if your is a fluke in that aspect?  I'll have to check mine out for that.

Handi,

I noticed the group was pretty low, but failed to take proper action.  I have relieved a lot of material out of this forearm, so it does float.  However, I notice there is still some movement, even when the screw is tightened down pretty tight.  I'm pretty sure the forearm stud was welded off center, which creates some of the problems.  I guess the leverage of the pressure at the end of the forearm, with the screw as a fulcrum, could account for some of the difference in POI.

Thanks MSP Ret...I finally made it back down here after the BIG move from Tulsa...What a strain that was(is). Now in addition to taking care of my mom who is faiding rapidly...I got stuff everywhere in boxes! Garage full too...to the ceiling!! Gotta say I haven't been too inthused over the shooting lately with all that has been going on. Thanks for the thoughts though. I may send Aladin a check and get myself one of those molds and send it to my buddy up in Ohio and let him cast me some bullets but may wait to see how you guys turn out first. I got reloading stuff boxes scattered everywhere and will be a while till I get back into it.......what a mess it is!!

Deadeye,

Sorry to hear about your mother.  Taking care of parents when they can't take care of themselves is an unenviable task, but one that has to done.  I applaud your efforts!

My mother-in-law stayed with us for over 2 years before she passed away.  It was difficult, but I wouldn't have done it any other way, if I had it to do over again.
