Super 16's In Same Place As 10" Barrels!
« on: March 31, 2004, 02:01:20 PM »
Picked up a 2004 T/C Catalog today.  There are not any Super 16 barrels listed anymore.  I never was that fond of them in pistol form but know a lot of folks liked them in Carbine form.

With the death of the 10"ers, Super 16's and a whole bunch of good calibers in the last few years the pickings for new toys is getting scarce!

Guess they would rather you order stuff from Fox Ridge rather than keep stuff in stock (assuming T/C gets the business).

I knew the 10's were history, but I thought they were going to retain the 16's.  Hate to here that.  I've come to appreciate the 16's more in recent years.  I've rigged some with see tru scope mounts so I can shoot pistol or carbine w/o changing sights and they are pretty neat.

On the bright side maybe the three 16" barrels I still have (22LR, 22WMR, 223) will go up in value.

Greg you're right, the price is going up.  I tracked a 16" Hornet barrel on Ebay a couple weeks ago...no scope, mount, rings...just barrel.  Almost $300.00.  It was NIB, but that still way too much for me.

hopalong, the people that buy off E bay almost always go over board on price.I once saw a PARTIAL box of 30-30's go for more than retail at a local gun shop. The box looked the same as the ones at Walmart,so they weren't collector pieces. My daughter in law gave up yard sales for ebay!

it saddens me to see the caliber offerings and barrel length offerings get cut shorter and shorter every year...   :(

one has to wonder what will happen in 10 years...

Chris
More and more people will just get their barrels from Bullberry, Virgin Valley, etc.  There are still alot of used barrels available also.

thats where I will get the majority of my Thompson Center barrels. I don't care for the new 12 inch barrels they are neither fish nor fowl give me a 10" or a super 14. The super 16 is a great carbine barrel and much more compact than the otherwise 23" or longer barrels. The 6.5",10",14",&16.25" are my personal favorite barrel lengths for my Contenders.

Guys, please don't panic, the 16.25" barrels are still available from the T/C Custom Shop.  Better quality than standard tubes and not that much more expensive.

Where does this come from?  As far as caliber offerings - there are 12 different handgun chamberings on the T/C website.  My 1992 T/C catalog lists 12 different handgun chamberings.  I wouldn't worry too much about the next ten years fellows...

With new offerings like the .204 Ruger and the .375 JDJ we still have a lot of choices.  T/C is a business and they make what sells.  If the .204 or the .375 don't sell well, I wouldn't expect to see them listed in a few years.  If the past is any indication, T/C will replace them with different chamberings.  Have faith, the glass is half full!

TC & 10" barrels
« Reply #8 on: April 03, 2004, 05:24:31 PM »
I hate to see the 10" barrels go ! A bit of trivia--10" TC is the approximate same length as a 83/8" S&W  , how TC came up with the 10" length or so I was told by early TC contacts. I bought my first TC set in 1969 , 22LR and 357 Mag in a red velvet lined walnut case with TC in big gold letters on the inside cover of the box. The serial number was 1100 range and the barrels had 3 holes under the sight for screws not 4 and had a "snap on " foreend not screw on. The grip had a nice silver but plate that  TC would engrave your initials on if you sent the plate back to them . It was and is a fine little gun first conceived to fill in some down time at the machine company and never really intended for case heads larger than .374 . All that has happened after is just history of a very capable design. The TC has changed with demands on it and I hope will continue to change and be successful. If you don't think it popular look at what gets the most post and views on GB ? I can't help it I still love the little calibers it was intended for 22LR,22Hornet and 357 mag. You could do worse in a combo.

Have to disagree with ya Lone Star

A barrel from Fox Ridge is $230 without sights, $260-270 with sights I believe.  Factory barrels run about $190-$210 if you shop and that is with sights.  That is quite a bit of difference in my opinion for what is a factory barrel in a non standard caliber (that is my judgement, and I do won a Fox Ridge Barrel.

As far as calibers that are now gone from the standard list, 22 Mag, 222, 357 Max, 375 Win, 41 Mag, Straight 45 LC, and these are just ones that come to my mind that still seem to have a lot of interest which is verified by the high price they command on the used market.

To each his own I guess Bullseye.  To me it seems most serious buyers scope their T/C barrels, so the extra $20-$40 for a "custom" tube seems worth it - to me anyway.  It sure beats buying a real custom barrel from VV, EABrown, etc.

High prices on the used barrel market might mean a lot of interest, but that could just as easily mean that they were purchased just because they are discontinued - the buyers want to own one now that it is too late and they are gone, or they want to re-sell them.  The latter is a prime reason why they are getting more expensive - the speculators want to make a profit.

Well Lone Star

Even though we have a difference of opinion on a couple of things (which is normal in life), we agree on one thing.  The price of a Fox Ridge barrel is way better than any of the other custom options.

I am not a speculator myself, I have just recently sold another one of my rare barrels and I am now only left with so called standard rounds and a 375 Win.  A couple of them I always said I would never sell, but it seems I shoot them less and then another desire arises.

I can relate Bullseye - I have yet to sell one of my 14 barrels ( or is it 16? ), but who knows what the future holds.  I almost bid on a TCA .38-55 barel on eBay last week, but it went for over $235 IIRC.  I'm not that much of a collector.....

Unless you have to have a custom barrel
« Reply #13 on: April 06, 2004, 03:51:48 AM »
I find a quick trip or phone call to Eds is worth the time he always has some odd ball calibers and barrel lengths avaiable including custom barrels from all the custom houses give him a call and tell him what you are looking for if he don't have he may know where to get it and I mean without waiting 6-12 weeks and in most calibers complets with sights some even in hunter models. Go for it.
