need help to identify old side by side
« on: April 02, 2004, 03:34:08 PM »
hi everyone,
i was hoping someone could help me identify an old side by side 12 gauge i found while cleaning out my grandfathers basement,(he died 3 years ago).  it is in pretty rough shape, but if i could find thee info on it i think i will fix it up, not to use, but to hang on the wall.
First off, there is no writing visible on the barrel, but i think this is due to the fact it has been painted sometime in the past.  The only visible writing i can find says "S.G. EDWARDS"  It is written on the sideplate just above the triggers. The firing pins are clearly visible from the outside and the hammers have the same shape/curve in them as an old flintlock would have.  This is all i can remember right now, as i left the gun back in his basement wheree i found it.
i would love to get some info on this gun so i could fix it up, for sentimental reasons.
oh yeah, according to what i have been  told by my uncles, they think the gun is somewhere around 100 years old

thanks
travis

A lot of the old external hammer cartridge guns were Damascus steel barrels.  You might want to think about cleaning the paint off, you could find some very beautiful patterns in the steel.  If it is an old junker, you have nothing to lose.  But it would lok better on your wall if you could bring out more of the original detail.
....make it count
