I am seriously thinking about bringing my family up for the convention.
Would there be anything for my kids to do once we get there, but in town and at the convention?

Buckeye,

I live about 200 miles from this town.  So I know nothing of Berrian Springs.

Appleknocker can you help here.  If memory serves me right Appleknocker lived in Berrian Springs and he can help you better then I can.

You  have great beaches on lake Michigan from Bridgman to St. Joseph, which are all easy commutes from Berrien Springs.  The St. Joseph River flows through Berrien Springs and is widely know for the great fishery.  You can expect to catch walleye, catfish, small mouth bass, pike, carp and maybe some late run suckers or steelhead.  At the damn on the St. Joseph River in Berrien Springs is a fish ladder for steelhead and salmon to continue up the river all the way to South Bend and Mishawaka in Indiana, which is kind of neat to see if you don't have such things in your part of the country.  There are many u-pick farms in the area which would be glad to help  burn off some of that energy kids have, while providing some tasty fruit and vegetables.  There is a nature center about 3 miles out of town on Huckleberry Road. (Yes, there is a real wild huckleberry marsh on that road, which is where I developed at a very early age my "apprehension" of snakes.)  There is another nature center, Fernwood, along the St. Joseph River almost to Buchanan.   Shopping, malls, miniture golf and other amusements are in St. Jospeh/Benton Harbor and Niles.  Notre Dame is only 45 minutes away if you have never seen the Gold Dome and "Touchdown Mary".  Also fantastic shopping east of Notre Dame/South Bend on Grape Road.  The entire area is filled with fine dining, family dining and fast food.  If you are inclined to indulge in spirits, different than those at Notre Dame, there are many places to quench your thirst.  There are many historical sites in the area including an old court house and school right in Berrien Springs.  Andrews University is also in Berrien Springs which is a large Seventh Day Adventist University.  For those of you that are concerned, Niles has completly recovered from  Bob Wendt growing up in that community, and the rumor that the town bought his train ticket out of town is still being investigated!

I've never been to a convention and was wondering how demos work? Do they just make a habitat there at the convention? Or is it out in the woods doing the real thing?

Ryan, most demos at the conventions are done in an area made to simulate conditions you would run into on your trapline. Some conventions go all out, building ponds, beaver dams etc.Others --well lets just say some are more realistic than others.Either way you get to see sets made first hand by knowledgable trappers.

I have not seen the convention grounds and hope the demo area will accomodate all. One of the unfortunate reality's of some that I've been too is a lack of good seating, and I simply hate the standing circle that only allows the front row a good view. I'm hopeful Bering Springs will have a decent facility to accomodate the large crowds.

Dave,
How's it set up?

Your a might nice guy Mallard.

Everyone is going to love the convention grounds.  It has 143 acres.  Darn near unlimited rustic camping with something like 200+ sites with water and elec. with gary water and black water dump station.

Demo area is covered.  And there are more trees on the site then there is in all of Iowa.  Tail gating area is wonderful with trees for shade and elec. service to all tailgating spots.

Guys this is going to be one heck of a convention.  Everyone here in Michigan is ready looks like all the rivers will be below flood stage by then.

If you come in early Lake Michigan is just a very short drive and if you wanted to check and see if a charter boat has an opening.  Some of the best fishing in the country if you like salmon, steelhead, lakers, browns, and perch

Anymore questions please ask.  You will be sorry if you miss this convention.
