22 Magnum/rimfire problems in Ruger
« on: April 05, 2004, 04:23:19 AM »
I bought a Super single six  the other  day. It had the 22 mag cylinder installed when I got it.  I looked down the barrel and noticed a little fouling but not bad.and installed the 22 rimfire cylinder commencing to shoot a hundred rounds or so.  Poor groups of 2 inches at 15 yards that got worse and then bullets  started tumbling.  Apparently the metal fouling from the jacketed 22 mag shells grabbed the lead from the non mag bullets and it built up till a ring of lead reduced the inside diameter of the barrel at the forcing cone till once the bullet got past it the bullet would no longer grip the rifling.  I cleaned it with a brush and Hoppes benchrest solvent and it looks fine now. More testing to follow.  I also did the poor boy trigger job by cutting the main spring 1 1/2 coils and bending the trigger return spring arms, made a heck of a difference.

I never had that problem in any .22 Single Six revolvers I owned Rick.  I wonder what mag. ammo the previous owner was shooting?  Must have been some foreign copper washed stuff.  I've fired thousands of .22 Mag and .22LR in 5 1/2" and 6 1/2" Rugers and never had any gorp buildup "Except!" with the lead lubed Mexican manufactured truncated cone .22LR.  The Mexican stuff shot like %^&$ and turned the bore into what looked like a shotgun tube.  Let us know how it shoots with the clean bore...................Mike

I have a single six. I fired lead .22 LR ammo in it, then switched to the .22 mag cylinder. I was keyholing every 3rd or 4th bullet at a distance of 10 yds. I took it home and gave it a good cleaning to clean out the metal fouling. When I went back to try it again, the magnums shot just fine.
Get rid of the fouling in the forcing cone area.

Well thoroughly cleaned it shoots fine, ragged hole groups at 50 feet.  There was major leading and chunks came out of the forcing cone area. The same ammo that was going sideways shoots really well.  Any market out there for 22 magnum cylinders?
