howie1968,

I think that before we can give you any load recommendations we will need to know what type of rifle your friend is using.  Old rifle or newer?  Lever action, single shot or bolt action?  These will make a difference.  Lawdog

I used the Remington 300 grain HP a bit on deer and a few hogs with a load close to the 54 grainer and had no problem moving to 405 grain Rem soft points.  I got great accuracy with 32 grains of IMR 4227 pushing the 405 grain bullet to around 1500 fps. Good shooting and moderate recoil. For more power I used IMR 4198 and H 4895 and the 405 Remington to more than 1700 fps where recoil begins to enter the picture.  I liked the 4198 powder a bit better because you use less and it leaves very little fouling.  Both powders worked fine though.  3031 and the 300 grain bullets made my bore look like a log chute. Howie your NEF can take more pressure than my 1895 marlin but the real limitation is recoil.  I settled on the 4227 load for all my hunting.
