Top Water
« on: April 06, 2004, 12:52:46 PM »
Went out early this morning and the top water action was great.  Using small 1/8 oz. buzzbaits(white on white) worked the best in the shallows, 2 to 6 feet.  I fished for a little over 90 minutes and landed 14 from 1 to 4 pounds.  Best way I can think of to start a days work.  Lawdog

I hope the topwater action here is better than it was lastyear there wasn't much action.  The fish were there but wouldn't come up to strike topwater baits.  They hit shallow running cranks and carolina rigged plastics.  The only thing i could see that was different over the other years there wasn't much thick cover as the years before due to the longer colder spring the weeds never took off and grew in thick nor spread out like in the past years.  Do you think that is why the topwater bite could be off or that different?

I went for the for the first time of the year this Saturday.  While getting ready at 8:00 p.m. the night before, I realized I didn't have my favorite top water lure. Heddon's Zara Spook, the puppy version. I called my buddy to take a run to Bass Pro, but he said I was nut's for wanting to drive a hour to get there just for a $4 lure.

Well let's just say he now wishes he would have went. I caught 17 bass to his measly 5. :)  Cal

Topwater is one of the most fun ways to catch a bass.  Let's face it, it's exciting to reel in a fish that just blew up on a lure you can see.

My favorite top water is a Pop R.  I've caught a ton of fish on them over the years and variations of that bait.  The Chugger which used to be made by Heddon was slightly better, but they've been out of production for years and are hard to come by.  I think Carl Morton had his supply burried with him.

Rebel Jumping Minnow

The Rebel Jumping minnow is one of my favorite topwaters..they have discontinued the best size for black and white bass.  It was the diameter of the F-100 minnow, and about 41/2" long.  I caught my largest largemouth(8 lbs. even) on one and my largest smallmouth (6 3/4Lbs)on one..bone color.  The only ones they still offer are the larger saltwater version.  They are good for hybrids and stripers..but are a tad big for the blackbasses.
The Top Dog series from Mirrolure have produced quite a few fish for me.  They are designed for saltwater, but the smaller versions work really well.  The Catch 2000 is a slow sinking lure that works towards the surface as its retrieved.  I have caught some really nice fish on it also.

I used to have a Baby Lucky 13 in the frog pattern. I added a black bucktail hook to the back and a red strip down the belly. The largemouth loved it. One windy day in about 5 feet of water I chugged it over a log and boom....a 5 pounder slammed it. He got wrapped in the log and with the wind and excitement and an excited fishing buddy, I soon was watching him swim away with my favorite top lure in his mouth. Haven't been able to find one like it since.
I have had good success with white buzzbaits and chug-bugs but never like it was with that Baby Lucky 13.
