Pet loads for Knight Wolverine-.50 cal???
« on: April 08, 2004, 07:32:21 AM »
I am looking to fine tune my wolverine.  It is several years old, the stainless one with the recessed slim line stock.  I guess it has a 1-28 twist. It currently shoots 2 pyrodex pellets and a barnes 250 grain sabot at about 2" at 100 yards.

I currently have on hand pyrodex pellets (50 gr.), RS loose powder, and will be buying some 777 loose powder.  I have barnes 250 grain sabots and 245 grain powerbelts.

I am open to any loads that you may know of that shoot well in this or similar guns.  I am not tied to the components listed above, I am contemplating different Dead Center bullets, the Hornady sst bullet, etc.  I will purchase whatever is necessary to make this gun a real shooter, but would rather not invest in a bunch of components that I'll never use.

This gun will be used for whitetails and shots could be from close in to all the way out to its capability.

Thanks for any input.

I have a short barreled (20") Mk85.  My best load, by far, has been the 250 gr. barnes expanders, with 80 grains of T7 FFFG.  For me, this load will shoot about 1".  usually 2 out of three will touch.  Longest kill was 186 yds (lasered) on a whitetail.  I tried 100 grains of T7 FFFG with the Barnes bullet.  TOO HOT!  Blew the bolt open and ejected the primer like an M-16.  Stoney

I don't know if you have found your load yet...I just finished working up loads for two different Knights...Both have a 22" barrel...like your Wolverine...One  is a Disc...and one an American Knight....The pet load for the Disc for the past several years was 2-50gr Pryodex pellets and a 300 gr Barnes...for the American...2 pellets and a 295 Powerbelt....Both rifles would group these loads into 1 1/2 inches at 100 yds...but because of improvements in bullets and powder in last few years wanted to see if we could make them 150 yd shooters...

After working with for the past 3 evenings...ended up with same load in both rifles....90gr fff Triple Seven...250 SST Hornady...both would group within 4 inches at 150 yds...Sighted at 3 inches high at 100...both were pretty close to dead on at 150...I did try the SSTs with 2-50 gr pellets of Triple Seven and with 85,90,95 and 100 gr loose Triple Seven...On the Disc...started to see excessive pressure...so I backed off...

I  also have  220 Dead Centers and 200 Hornady SSTs on order...if they group, I'll let you know....flintlock

I have had great success(accuarcy wise and performance when bullet hits meat and bone) in all my knights(wolverine, mk85, mag disc and mag bighorn) shooting the 250gr XTP with the knight high pressure sabot and  90 or 100 gr of triple 7 ffg.

All my hunting is for whitetails out of tree stands or box blinds where shots can be from 5 yds to 150 yds.

I have a self imposed limit of only taking the 75 yd or longer, up to 150 yd shot, only at deer that are completly broadside.
