First step in trueing an action

I've heard the first step is truing the barrel threads, but I have a hard time understanding what they mean.

Is it removing and recutting threads larger than the old, OR is it bending the action so it lines up with the rails?  Either way, is there a tool or something you can screw into the action to see if the threads are cut straight or not.

  For all I know it's all baloneny anyway.

What you are hearing about is making sure that the face of the action, and if nessecary the inner surface at the end of the threads, but that usually doesn't need to be touched.  The action would need to be put in a lathe and the face just lightly trued to the threads.  Most of this concerns rebuilding mausers, but is part of blueprinting any modern action for upmost accuracy.  Hope that helps.

There is a mandrel available that uses bushings to center a precision cut rod in the action and screwed tight to the front ring(where the barrel goes).  This is designed to allow it to be set between centers and driven with a lathe dog.  The allows a cleanup cut on the fron of the front ring.  Some smiths will single point cut (chase) the threads in the receiver ring to verify they are even and concentric with the action.  Unless damaged I consider this step NOT madatory.  Cleaning up the front of the receiver ring should always be done, although there are many way to accomplish it.

   Do you know of a good site where I  can see pictures of what your talking about?

   I'm also wondering what goes into rebarreling a 700 if you have a good place to read about that as well.

The Rem. 700 Tap/Mandrel is made by Manson Precision, it cuts the threads .010" oversize although they just started making one that does not cut oversize threads. You can rent that tool here, http://4-dproducts.com/tools.html
