Just lucked into a like NIB #1 in 257 roberts and I am excited!! Just wondering what kind of scope to top it with?? And what kind of range can I expect with factory loads?

Lubbockdave, Put the best scope on the .257 you can afford for the kind of hunting that you want to do. Every gun is different, but the factory loads give the .257 a bad name. You can reload for the .257 and it will group really good. I have two and they have been my favorite for years. Carl L.

You lucky dog. I had one several years ago and it was deadly on deer with 100 gr barnes at about 3100. If I remember right I had an old Weaver 3-9 on it that had about 4.5 inches of eye relief. Burris scope are also good as they allow you to mount the scope further to the rear. What power of scope you mount depends on what you are going to use the rifle for. For deer you don't need anything more powerful that a 2-7 or 3-9.

Congrats - the #1 is a classy rifle!

My Ruger M77 .257 Roberts has a 22" barrel. Federal's 120g Nosler Partition loads leave the barrel at 2682fps, although they are rated at 2780fps. Your #1 should have a 26" barrel and velocity will be closer to the 2780fps mark.

Sighted in for Maximum Point Blank Range for a 6" diameter target and assuming 2780fps:

+ 3.0"    125 yards
+ 0.0"    233 yards
- 3.0"    273 yards
-10.0"    335 yards

My handloads push a Barnes 115g TSX to 2958fps but the extra velocity only adds another 25 yards to the -10" range (360 yards).

I have found the .257 Roberts to be a very light recoiling rifle, even with the heaviest loads, making it a real joy to shoot. Again your #1 has an advantage by being a pound heavier. Recoil for the Federal 120g load should be around 11.5 foot-pounds with a scope mounted.

Too many good choices on scopes, although your intended use will eliminate many. Is this going to be a carry rifle or a prairie dog rifle?

I.m kinda looking at it as my "stand" rifle as I have a marlin that is lighter/easier to carry. I like to travel as light as possible when stalking deer. I might look at a Burris-just got a new one and like it a lot, but it is my first $200+ scope--up til now been using cheap tasco's--wow, what a difference. I wonder how much better the buschnell 3200 and the nikon monarchs/leupolds are than this burris?!!??

Don't discount the Weavers. The grand slam will give any scope in remotely the same price bracket a run for it's money and some of them a sound thrashing.
