.45 Slide oil mix

If I recall, there was a discussion on the board before of the 'secret' oil mix the services armory uses.  Something like x parts of Mobil 1, x parts of Marvel Mystery oil/or ATF.

Does anyone have this mixture?  I did a search but had no hits.

Why not just use Wilson 1911 oil and/or grease in the handy syringe he packages the stuff in? If it works for the high volume shooters in their race guns, it should work for use average shooters.  :eek: pg

First, FP10 is a better lube, so use that instead. There are some posts on it below. Search for something like "why did it take me so long".

Secondly, if you absolutely must for some strange reason of curiosity or passion, try it (as I did), then here are two of the several recipes of "Military red lube":

Recipe 1:
6 parts F type automatic transmission fluid
2 parts 10w-30 synthetic oil
1 part STP oil treatment
1/4 part Hoppes #9

Recipe 2:
1 part STP oil treatment
2 parts Marvel Mystery Oil
2 parts automatic transmission fluid
3 parts 10w-30 synthetic oil.

Oops. I forgot to mention something. The military hasn't used that in a long time for its shooting teams. They use FP10 now.  Some may still be using BreakFree, though.

The post on Wilson's oil and grease is absolutely correct. I use the Wilson syringes, then refill the oil syringe with FP10 when it's empty. It's superior stuff and the syringes absolutely are the best for topical application of lube on a 1911.

Oh, by the way, here's a great recipe for gun cleaning solvent from American Gunsmithing magazine. I haven't bought Hoppes #9 in years:

40 percent deodorized kerosene (costs a little more. available at good hardware stores.)

40 percent mineral spirits.

15% Marvel Mystery oil

5 percent STP oil treatment or Rislone

Effective, smells pretty good, nice color, leaves a slightly oily film. Great stuff.

In the last 25 years, I think I've tried just about everything you can imagine to lube a 1911 top end.  As far as I am concerned today, there is only ONE slide lube out there worth the money:

Do yerself a HUGE favor and get a tub of this stuff. Try the #1 formula first as the heavier stuff may be too heavy.  Then you'll come back and thank me profusely for turning you on to it - if not, you're just an ingrate...hehehe

FP-10 is the best for anywhere oils are needed, but grease is definitely the way to go on the top end -- that is, if it's "Slide-Glide"

Another good lube is a product called Kellube

It was formulated by a custom gun builder in Decatur, Indiana by the name of Neil Keller.  Neil used his background in engineering, race motorcycle building and gunsmithing to develop this synthetic lube.  It's all I use anymore.

Neil also happens to be a crackerjack gunsmith, in case anyone's asking.

GREAT.... Thanks guys.   After reading everyting I ordered some of the FP10 last night.
