H&R 45/70 Trapdoor Springfield
« on: April 14, 2004, 11:39:00 AM »
Well, I've gone and done it again   (those on-line auctions are killing my bank book  )....anyway,  my new (slightly used) H&R 45/70 Trapdoor Springfield will shortly join my 38-55 "Target"and "45/70 Buff Classic".  Now folks, I shoot ONLY Black Powder, and cast all my own lead....and I have good working load for the 45/70 and a fantastic load for the 38-55......  BUT....I read from various on line sources that  the original Trapdoor Carbine was loaded with 55 grains of Black Powder, and the 70 grain load reserved for the Infantry model.
Do any of you gentelmen shoot the 45/70 Trapdoor  with a 55 grain laod and if so how does it perform?
Also if anyone wants some 38-55 ammo that was professionally produced I have several boxes that I will NEVER use.  Let me know as I will part with it for a great savings.  Thanks again.... 8) .

Topper, that's the very reason I don't go to auctions, auction houses or auction web sites.
I do not have one and have only fired one of the  H&R Springfields and It belonged to one of those sacrilegious individuals that only used across-the-counter smokeless stuff.
It's my understanding that there is a book out there that is the definitive Trapdoor load manual.  I don't remember the name of it and it is talked about on this web site but was on one of the forums that got consolidated.  I'll see if I can find mention of it and get that to you sometime this week end.
Congratulations on your new purchase.  I hope you have great luck with it and please keep us informed of your progress with it.

Thank you for much for your kind interest.  I will get the book and get on with the project.  I shot the "Buff Classic" yesterday with the 530 grain headand 70 grains and Lord Almighty it is one powerful sumbitch.. ..however it is very accurate.  I think I have this critter figured out.  Now on to the Trapdoor.  Again thanks.
