Holster care between shoots??
« on: April 15, 2004, 08:14:35 AM »
Any ideas on proper care of holsters?  Know some keep their 6-guns in them but I figure that's asking for rust.  Some but round spray paint caps in to keep them open and some don't do anything.

Thoughts?....

The cheap Cabella holsters get tennis balls.

I think that it depends to a large part on where you live. Here in Nevada, I don't worry about rust. However, I do worry about high temperatures and direct sunlight. When I lived in the People's Republic of Kalifornia, my biggest fear (after politicians) was RUST.

Guns go in the safe, holsters stay on belts and get stashed in a bin to wait until the next match. I wipe them down with rag with a VERY light smear of leather preserver very infrequently. This is done mostly to clean them. I don't want them to get soft.

Howdy pard,

I've used tennis balls and coke bottles.  I think I like using the gun, the best.  I don't have any rust worries.
Right now, I'm thinking about putting a ziploc bag around my pistola and then sticking that back in the holster.  Or, I'm gonna have to make a whole new drawer area to keep my leather... I'm still searching for a way I'm liking to store my leather.
(the tennis balls are cheap and easy)

Hext :D
That stuff you call humidity up in Drippin Springs is a lot lower than our stuff on tha gulf coast. I did tha bag thing ONCE on a piece down here an it was a near disaster.
Tha tennis balls a good thing fer tha leather but I still doan think it is a good thing to put tha leather where it can't breath, down here.
You boys with tha six shooter don't have the need to keep a form of tha pistole like us other folks, so I guess I shoulda kept that in mind when I said sumthin.

I stick them in a canvas bag as soon as I'm done shootin' and I leave them there till the next shoot.
