Ruger 22/45 or Browning Buckmark Camper?
« on: April 17, 2004, 09:04:32 AM »
I'm in the market for a .22LR auto-loading pistol for general target shooting and plinking.  I'm looking to spend as little as possible, but still want a decent gun.  The two guns that I've narrowed down my selection to are the Browning Buckmark Camper (about $330 after taxes) and the Ruger 22/45 (about $300 after taxes).  Both have 5.5" barrels.  Basically, I'm wondering what the consensus was as to feed reliability and accuracy between these two guns.  Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Mike,

I don't know anything about the Browning, but I have a Ruger 22/45 in stainless with the bull barrel.

It is very reliable and haven't had trouble feeding it anything yet.  It seems to prefer the inexpensive Remington ammo over the Federal and Winchester for accuracy, but functions well with all.  It is very accuracte and the trigger is nice.

The downside is that isn't much available in holster selection made for this model.  I use soft nylon Uncle Mikes number something and it works, as well as a Bianchi X-15 leather shoulder holster with it and that works the best.  The other down side was the back angle of the front target sight.  Nice sight, but it scrapped the sight channel on holsters when it was withdrawn.  It has kind of like a knife edge.  Well I was at the Ruger facility in Prescott and speaking one of the guys there and he to just file that back.  I did and it works fine now.

The attribute of pistol is that it has the same grip angle as the Government model 1911 for inexpensive practice.  I don't have much use for it in that respect as I don't have my Government Model any longer, and don't have much other use for a .22 pistol.   It pretty much sits in it's box as I use my centerfires just about all the time now.

PS.  Now that I just closed this, if you want to save some cash, see if you have something to trade and I would be willing to let it go.  Not interested in selling it, but always interested in trading.

Thanks, but I don't really have anything in the way of firearms that I'm looking to get rid of.  Usually if I don't like it I'll get rid of it pretty quickly so most of what I've got I like :).  Thanks again for the offer though.

MGMorden,
You can NEVER go wrong with the Ruger MKll or the 22/45 as a target plinker. Some indivduals have trouble with disassembly/assembly, but I have never had a problem. I currently own three and have owned a few more over the years that got away from me thru trades and divorce. Don't have any personal experience with the Buckmark. My son had one for a while, but got rid of it. Don't know if he had any problems or not. I know it wasn;t as accurate as my Rugers. I'm sure either one will serve you well.

I like the trigger on the Buckmark better than the Ruger 22/45.  They are both accurate 8) , I just prefer the Buckmark.

I too have a 22/45, accurate right out of the box. Now you have to get the Ultimate Clip loader, loads a 10 shot clip in 4 seconds......Makes shooting a lot more fun..

I have both a 22/45 and a Buckmark

I have both a Ruger 22/45 (Black/Blue) with Bull Barrel and a Buckmark, but the Target model in nickleplate.

Ruger 22/45,  There is this kind of target shooting competition called Bullseye shooting, where you are suppose to use a 45 Auto, a "center fire" (most use a 45 auto), and a 22 rimfire in the competition.  My understanding is that the Ruger 22/45 was created so that NRA Bullseye shooters would have a 22 that had the same angle of the grip compared to the barrel as with a 45 ACP M1911 A1.  Also the layout (i.e. where it is on the pistol) of the safety and magazine release on the 22/45 was to allow a Bullseye shooter to not get confused when they changed handguns.

The other real plus for the Ruger 22/45 is that as a gun designed for use in competitive shooting, there are lots of aftermarket assessories.  There are plenty of websites where you can go and buy scope mounts, special trigger assemblies, and get all kinds of special trick gunsmithing done for your 22/45.

The Rugger 22/45 like the Mark II has a tricky disassembly method, but once you figure it out it isn't that bad.  There are websites that will explain the trick for you.  (Make sure you find one and study it BEFORE you take your Ruger apart!).  There are also after-market kits that will modify your Ruger so that the problem goes away and the disassembly is more traditional.

I am not thrilled by all the plastic that the Ruger 22/45 incorporated into its design.  However, it is solidly built and I have had no problems with the plastic cracking or melting with cleaner solvents.

The Buckmark, as said above and in mine, has a sweet smooth trigger right out of the box.  One problem with a Buckmark if you have kids or a typical wife, is that it requires a bit more hand strength to operate the slide to chamber a round, then the Ruger.  That is the Ruger T-shaped end cap is very easy to grip and cycle a round into the chamber.  The Buckmark ridged slide can be a bit hard to grip tight enough to cycle.  Since there are far less Buckmarks out in the world, the amount of aftermarket stuff for them is much more limited.

I enjoy shooting both without any extra features.  They are both accurate.  They are both reliable.  I shoot my Buckmark more often than I shoot my Ruger 22/45.  My two sons enjoyed the Ruger much more.

I hope this helps.

the newer buckmarks have little ears on the slide now.  so that isn't an issue anymore.

:cb2: My Ruger Mark II was a constant jammer. About the only ammo it would feed reliably was CCI Blazer. Finally traded it for a .22 SP101. Naturally, being a revolver, it eats anything!

Haven't had any experience with the Browning, but I have with S&W .22s. I've got a 2206 that's fantastic and one of my shootin' buddies has one of the new ones, and he hasn't had a lick of trouble out of it.

Ive owned both and still have the Buckmark camper. It fit my big hands better and is much easier to take down for cleaning. I still have a soft spot for Rugers but not their 22 autos.

I love Ruger's single and double action revolvers but their pistols suck. I've owned a P89 and a standard model 22 and got rid of them both. I have a Buckmark Camper and love it. I almost bought the Smith 22A and still might get it eventually but the Ruger's won't make their way into my safe again.

:cb2: I like the looks of that Browning Buckmark Micro. If I ever get another .22 automatic I think that might just be the one.

I had the Buckmark and sold it. I still have my  Ruger MarkII and my Ruger 22/45. The only bullets the guns don't like is the Winchester sold at Wal-Mart in the bulk packs. They did not always have the power to eject the round. You could tell it when you shot it. The round was not even loud more of a pop. So it was not the gun but the ammo. I would recommend the Ruger over the Buckmark. JMHO

Hello :-D
I have  several RUger 22 autos...a mk1, 3 mk2, all eat pretty much any 22  ammo if I clean them up good afterwards. I bought a Buckmark 5.5 black w/heavy barrel..the only thing I like about it better than my Rugers is the trigger..but the cost of magazines($29 locally) is bad...all in all I like the Buck mark and Rugers well enough I am not looking to part with any of them..Just my honest and humble opinion  :D

The Browning Buckmark Camper is on sale at Gander Mtn for $239.99 through 6/19.  If I had my permit I think I would have scarfed one up.
