Brenneke slugs are changing
« on: April 18, 2004, 12:37:33 AM »
just wanted to let everyone know the good old brenneke slugs are going bye-bye. :(  :(  :(  :(  they are gone off the web page, and the are making new ones now. i just grabed the last six boxes here, and when i get back home i am going to grab what is around home too. i have shot and loved these in smoothbores for years. i guess like everyone else they had to try to fix what was not broken, and make slugs bigger and faster, and meaner. o-well enough of my complaining, but i wanted to give people a chance to get some while they could.

Thanks VC, I just bought a box of 1 oz 12 gauge yesterday, I'll run back and buy up what I can. Why do companies do this, change for change's sake is not a good thing....<><.... :(

VC,

Do you mean they are redesigning the actual slug itself or the way they are loaded? Do you mean Brenneke USA or Rottwiel Brenneke? They both load the Brenneke slug, but are definitely different loadings.

I only use the KO Sabots in my rifles slug barrels.  Are the Brenneke's that you speak the ones that I have seen for really cheap?  I remember seeing Brenneke slugs for somewhere around $1.50-$2.00 per box of 5.  Never did purchase them though.

the new ones claim to leave less lead in the barrel, some new coating or something. the part that bugs me is the good old brenneke slugs have been my favorite for years, and the new ones dont seem to be as good at long range. or the info on the web page shows them as a best sigting range of 70 yards, the others where like 93 yrds for the best sighting range. and the new ones are 1 oz slugs, and the old where 1 1/8 oz. i know now much difference. they are just a new fancy "black magic" slug, and in my thoughts i dont see any magic in losing 20+ yards. its just a new selling thing. i was warned about this by the guys at our big old hunting and fishing store a while back. but they said the where adding new slugs, i just found out that they are doing away with the old ones. now they do make a 3 inch mag that has a good sighting range. but what about the people who dont want to get beat up by 3 inch mags??? i guess it is just one of those things, but i still dont like it, i will stock pile a bunch of these, and just not waste any. because i guess when they are gone, they are gone.

BUSTA<-------- they are putting on a new coating, and the loads must be changing as the range is less then it used to be, by like 23 yrds. and they are using some new wad too. maybe i am just old fashion, but i cant see changing something that is not broken.

VC, I don't see where you are losing any range or energy, I see it as an increase in both as well as trajectory. That is why you have a shorter "best sight in range", because the trajectory is flatter so there will be less hold under at shorter range and less hold over at longer ranges. Lets face it, without rifling in your barrel a rifled slug has about a 100 yard maximum before it starts to wobble.

There are other companies loading Brenneke Slugs such as Dynamint/Nobel Rottweil.

Here is some FAQ from Brenneke USA:
Frequently asked questions about BRENNEKE slug ammunition
Q: Which of your slugs can I use in which barrel?
A:

SuperSabot 12 / 2¾”, 3” NO NO NO YES
Super Magnum (Gold) 12 / 3”  NO NO  NO  YES

Question: Why do your slugs work with choked barrels? What do the ribs do?
Answer: In 1898 Wilhelm Brenneke invented the modern shotgun slug. The most revolutionary aspect of his invention were the ribs. They make it possible to shoot any of our lead slugs from any choked barrel, regardless of choke size. The ribs are compressed when they pass through the choke, and excess lead is squeezed into the gaps between the ribs. There is no danger to the shooter, to the gun or to bystanders, and no wear and tear on the gun. Excellent accuracy is retained. In 1992, we added minor improvements which resulted in even higher accuracy: five-shot groups of under 2" at 50 yards are possible. Depending upon the case length (2¾" or 3") you can effectively use our slugs up to 100 yard ranges. Note that our SuperSabot and our Super Magnum are designed only for use cylindrical full-rifled barrels, and must not be fired from any type of choked barrel.

Question: What happens if I shoot your slug in a rifled barrel?
Answer: All our slugs can be shot from rifled barrels. No problem at all. Normally you will achieve even higher precision from a rifled barrel than from a smoothbore barrel. Groups of under 4" at 100 yards are no problem from a rifled barrel with our normal slugs.
However, we have two specialists, slugs designed for use in rifled barrels only: our Super Magnum (Gold), a 13/8 oz slug and our SuperSabot, a 11/8 oz expanding (up to 1") brass slug. These two products provide maximum accuracy (under 2" groups at 100 yards) from a rifled barrel, at ranges of over 100 yards.

Question: Does a rifled choke tube enhance the accuracy of your slugs?
Answer: Yes. Better accuracy is obtained by using a rifled choke tube. Almost all of our slugs can be through these types of chokes.
Please note, however, that our SuperSabot and Super Magnum are designed for use in cylindrical full-rifled barrels only, and must not be fired from any type of choked barrel, including rifled choke tubes.

Question: Why do the ribs of the Super Magnum (Gold) turn to the left, while the twist in rifled barrels is to the right?
Answer: Because almost all rifled shotgun barrels have a right-hand twist, that is exactly why we gave the ribs on the Super Magnum (Gold) a left-hand twist. The Super Magnum (Gold) is designed for rifled barrels only, and the ribs have no effect on the rotation of the slug. Their purpose is to provide superior guidance within the barrel than a slug without ribs is capable of.
The left-turning ribs also provide a better grip on the rifling within the barrel, resulting in superior rotation of the slug as it exits the barrel. This was proven during extensive research performed when we developed the Super Magnum (Gold).
We actually found that left-twisted ribs on the slug result in much better transfer of the barrel's rotation to the slug than did right-twisted ribs. It may seem strange, but consider that most automobile tires have their "ribs" (profile) also against the driving direction, in order to provide maximum grip.

Q: On what maximum ranges do your slugs provide sufficient precision and knockdown power?
A:
Slug  Maximum
Distance Game
SuperSabot 12 / 2¾”  80 + yd.  big game
SuperSabot 12 / 3”  100 + yd. big game
K.O. Sabot 12 / 2¾”  up to 80 yd. deer sized
K.O. Sabot 12 / 3”  up to 100 yd. deer sized
Super Magnum (Gold) 12 / 3”  100+ yd.  large / dangerous
Black Magic Magnum
12 / 3”  up to 100 yd.  large / dangerous
Magnum 20 / 3”  up to 80 yd. deer sized
Magnum .410 / 3”  up to 35 yd.  small / varmints
K.O. 12 / 2¾”  up to 60 yd.  deer sized
Heavy Field Short Mag.
12 / 2¾”  up to 100 yd. deer sized
Low recoil 12 / 2¾”  up to 35 yd.  deer sized
Buckshot 12 / 2¾”  up to 25 yd. deer sized

Question: Which of your slugs are suitable for self defense/police work?
Answer: Primarily our slugs were designed for hunting purposes. However, law enforcement officers in Germany soon found out, that they are very helpful in duty applications. We have two rounds that are very suitable for police work/self defense:

Low Recoil 12 GA: 2¾" case with a 1 oz slug. With 1511 ft lbs, more than enough stopping power, but due to the low recoil loading quick follow-up shots are possible.
Buckshot 12 GA: 2¾" case with 9 pellets (hard due to 6 % antimony, also copper plated), weight 11/8 oz.

Question: What is the velocity, energy and drop at various distances, and the optimum distance for sighting the rifle in on your slugs? Answer: Please refer to the data given on each product page sheet or on our homepage (www.brennekeusa.com). If you hunt at shorter distances only, please contact info@brenneke.de, and we will provide you with individual data.

Question: Don't the left-hand ribs on the Super Magnum (Gold) make the slug turn to the left against the right hand twist it gets from the barrel after leaving the muzzle?
Answer: A slug rotating one way that is forced by the air to rotate the other way will be unstable and unprecise. But first, in order to set a slug into rotation by air, you need much more than these small ribs. You need something like a fin or a tail wing to get a bullet rotating. Oddly designs with extended ribs or screw like slug heads are just cosmetic, as they have practically no influence on the rotation of the slug. Second, the Super Magnum (Gold) slug is rotating at 50,000 rpm. Wind resistance on the ribs is negligible.
Therefore, you do not have any negative effect caused by the ribs outside the barrel on a clockwise rotating slug, as the superb accuracy of less then 2" at 100 yard proves.

Question: What benefits do the CleanSpeed coating provide?
Answer: When a lead slug passes through a shotgun barrel, a substantial amount of lead residue is left behind. This makes cleaning a barrel tedious and a lot of work. Not with CleanSpeed! The special CleanSpeed coating acts as a lubricant, reducing lead fouling in the barrel to almost zero.

Question: What is the difference between Original BRENNEKE® and Rottweil BRENNEKE® other brands with BRENNEKE® slugs?
Answer: BRENNEKE® has worked as a subcontractor for other great ammunition companies for over a century. We delivered our slugs, they loaded and sold them. Therefore, you will find BRENNEKE® slugs with almost every leading shotgun cartridge manufacturer. Companies like Dynamit Nobel/RWS and other European manufacturers use our slugs, because they are simply the best.
In 1995 we decided, in order to serve the U.S. customer better, to load our slugs and sell the cartridges directly through distributors/dealers in the U.S. Our newest slugs, like the SuperSabot or the K.O. Sabot that provide state of the art in accuracy and knock down power, are available only through BRENNEKE® USA.

So, if you are looking for an outstanding shotgun slug, buy the original. Buy Original BRENNEKE® slug cartridges.

Q: My local dealer does not carry BRENNEKE slug. What could I do?
He can easily order them from one of the following distributors:
AcuSports
Apple Land
Beikirch
Chattanooga
Ellett Brothers
Green Supply
Sunset Distributors

busta<------- you may be right, i am not sure, but i for one am still going to buy up what i can.

and i guess my big point behind this was to let others who really like the brennekes know to buy them while they can. i have an older remington wingmaster 870. yes its a 2 3/4 only. but i have had it for just about forever, and i have a smoothbore deer barrel with it, and its sure killed its share, and then some over the years, and it just has always loved the good old brenneke slugs. i get 100 yrds with almost no drop, and a deer killing group all the time with them.  i think i am around 2 or 3 inches high at 50 yrds with them, to be dead on at 100. but boy does she knock the hell out of what she hits       but really i am still not happy with the change, as these have always done whatever i wanted them to do, and soon they will be gone forever. :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :(  :( maybe the new ones will be a "better" slug, but i for one see no need to change them. if you need anymore then an old brenneke 2 3/4 inch mag slug, then you dont need a smoothbore slug gun at all. and maybe somone wanting more should look to a 12ga rifled slug gun, or maybe a 30-06, or something. but only my 2 cents :D  :D  :D  :D

VC,

I understand what you mean about having something that works. My son also has a 870 Smoothbore with a rifled tube in the end. His gun is very accurate with the Rottweil Brenneke 2-3/4" loads. He has never missed a deer with it and boy do they leave a nice hole!  The Brenneke slug is designed to punch cut a hole with the sharp ribs and they do what they are designed to do. The Foster is inferior IMHO, and my experience with them.

You must like the Brenneke USA brand, eh? I hope you find as many as you would like, but I am sure their new offering will be as good. Less  leading, that is for sure.
