I would like to know what to do different in the afternoons as apposed to the mornings. I've hunted in Ohio where the hunt is over at noon. I'll be hunting in Az. where you can hunt all day. Do you use different methods in the P.M. ? Will the bird's gobble in the P.M. in response to a yelp? I know most hens go to the nest in the P.M. Thanks

I have always had luck in the afternoon because all of the hens go to the nest. Also I have found that alot of the guys leave in the afternoon. Toms get lonely and sometimes hammer at your calls and sometimes come running in to check you out. Hope this helps. Like I said it has worked for me except on Eastern birds. Good luck.

I hunt in Alabama, and overall, I've killed as many in the afternoon as in the morning. They do a lot less gobbling than in the A.M., but will still respond to calls. Remember, turkeys are on the ground all day, and if in good globbler territory, one just may come walking by giving an opportunity to shoot without even calling.

Afternoons are great! Every Eastern I have killed in the afternoon came in quiet, but not so with the Merriams. I have killed 2 Merriams in AZ, and both were killed in the evening and both came in gobbling.

This may sound funny but around here the best way to get an afternoon big gobbler is to do a push. Around here the big toms already know what a hunter sounds like and they won't resond to a call nor come to one. So the best method that i've used is to spot a few out in a field, figure out what way they'll go when spooked, set up there and have a friend go and spook em. This year i got a 10 4/8 incher doin that. Good luck to ya.

Hi my wife was hunting the secend day of season of Ark in the afternoon and called in a 24 1/2 pds 11 inch beard 1 inch spurs she said he came in struting and gobbling he was by his self VM

That sure looks just like the one I took last Friday at four in the afternoon. Called him in after a few minutes calling in 6A South between Stoneman Lake and Apache Maid mountain. Where were you hunting?

Me and my son were in unit 1-- about 6 miles east of big lake at 9200 ft. We had birds going every day. Saw lots of elk,antelope ,deer and one BIG bear at 4:30 a.m.on a old service road.My son missed one Mon. a.m. (a touch of turkey fever) After the snow storm friday a.m. the weather got nice and the birds started gobbling a little.

Dan,

I have been through that area some, used to live in Alpine a long time ago.

Where I took my bird was at about 6,000. They were feeding on grasshoppers where the treeline mixes with grassey meadows.

My son and his stepson will be going back this weekend to see if they can fill their tags. I will probably go along to call and make comments.
