Excellent job jeff223. Congrats on a great turkey. Our season does not start till next Monday. They have been gobbleing for 4 weeks now. WV needs to bring our season in sooner but the DNR will not do it. Everybody up here that hunts knows it.

Jeff,
Great job, but I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. When I saw the subject saying a Tom fell today, I was hoping it was Dacshel! :)  Good hunting! :D

Way cool Jeff!  I got a real nice tom a week ago saturday.  I would have posted some pics but my computer is not talking to my camera.  My hunt this year lasted all of about 10 minutes.  It's great to have my Dad(guide) that is retired.  He always knows where all the birds are.  BTW, I cooked my bird the next day.  I tryed some thing a little different this year.  I breasted him out, cut the breast into strips(about 1 1/2x1 1/2x 5 or 6")
Then I wraped them in a strip of bacon held on with some toothpicks. Then I injected them with creole butter marinate and cooked them on the grill- basting with more creole butter.  They were EXCELLENT!

Jeff.
That is one nice turkey. I never hunted turkeys. Are they good eating.
In Alberta they set out some Wild turkeys and they have a lotterie each year to hunt avery few. This is like winning in 6-49. I never even put in for the draw. You only allowed to kill Toms with a certain size beard.

Where about you hunt them? Are there many of them?

whitedogone,my hunt lasted about 10 minutes too.that soulds like a good way to cook turkey.i might try that myself.

fred, there are lots of turkeys here in Michigan but you must put in for a draw too.in the spring hunt toms are the only targets.they must have a visable beard to be legal.the wild turkeys are good to eat.i breast them out and eat only that part of the turkey

One way that I like to cook them is on the smoker.  I breast out the bird and cook the legs/thighs seperately.  I wrap them up tightly in aluminum foil and smoke them for about 5 hours.   They literally fall apart when you open the package up.  Most people don't even try to cook the legs and thighs but I have found them to be great!  Frying the breast is good too.

Jeff, try to take the thighs and legs and throw them in the Crockpot along with a little water.  When the meat falls off in bone, let it cool down then pull the meat off the bone.  Throw it and the drippings in a ziplock and label it Turkey Stock.  Then throw it in the freezer.  Makes great soup or Turkey and noodles.
