White Aardvark in Texas??
« on: April 20, 2004, 06:54:10 AM »
You Texans tell me what I saw in the middle of the road one night? About 20 yrs ago while working in southwest Texas---I came on an animal in the middle of the  road late one night that I have never been able to identify or find a picture of. No, I wasn't drinking or under the influence of any herbs. The body was about 2 ft long and it had a thick rat like tail. The head looked like an anteater with a long pig like snout, and had long pointed ears. It was covered with whited hair. The animal probably weighed 20-30 lbs. Almost reminded me of a giant possum with a pigs head. It moved slow so I had plenty of time to look at it--I drove right up to it with my headlights and followed it off the road into a shallow depression. This occured between Big Lake and Coleman Texas.

Coatamundy (sp) is what you probobly saw.
I've seen a few in southern Arizona. Their usually in groups of 10-25, the ones I've seen.
Blow a vintage Circe dinner bell and they will come...

Sure sounds like an aardvark, but those aren't native to North America.  It could have been some kind of escaped exotic pet, or it could have been a really ugly and balding peccary.

I have seen ringtail cats and javelina when I worked in the oil fields. It was neither one of these. I'm serious--after all these years I can't figure out what I saw. I was out in the middle of nowhere. I doubt it was someones runaway pet. I can't even find a picture of it in a wildlife book, no matter what part of the world it came from. Makes me believe my friends in Austraia who say they regularly see a Tasmanian tiger in their yard. My father and I saw a timber wolf in Oregon 30 yrs ago--wildlife commision says "no way".  Some of my hunting friends have seen wolverines, grizzly bears, and moose in various parts of Oregon--wildlife experts say "no way".  Unlike others, I have not seen Sasquatch----yet. You guys from texas and the soutwest, help me out on this one???

Desertyote--thanks for the picture, but it's not what I saw. The tail was naked like a rat or opposum, ears stood up and were pointed, the nose was more like a pig snout. Only similarity- the body shape and fir. The animal I saw was pure white. I looked at it from about 5-8ft away.

You sure it wasn't Ted Kennedy on all fours crawling away from the bar where he just got a mean drunk on?

Jack Crevalle--Did you think I was joking? Do you think you are funny? You're wrong on both counts. Get serious-don't  mock those who ask honest questions.

There was nothing directed at you personally in my post unless you are Ted Kennedy.

i am sure jack didnt mean to offend you.  just taking a shot at teddy(the right kind of way to take a shot at a kennedy,i might add).  taken in the right context, i thought it was pretty funny.
as far as what you might have seen, i havent the foggiest; but it sure sounds different from anything i have ever seen.

I know how you feel about Teddy. The animal I saw could best be described as a very large Armadillo with covered with long white hair. Now is that weird or what? That was my impression that night and still today. Theoretically this animal does not exist.
