I have a very nice ruger #3 in .223 sitting in the safe and like the gun the way it is but I was wondering...

I'd like to have a smaller/short stock 243 and have been playing with the idea of getting a NEF, or maybe one day a ruger #1 but then it occured to me, maybe I could get the #3 I have re-bored to 243. Is this possible? a good thing to do to this #3? and can any gunsmith do this? has anyone done this before? and can you rec a good gunsmith to do this?

I love Ruger single shots. I have 3 #3's, 22 hornet, 30-40 krag, and
45-70, and a #1 standard in 3006.
The 45-70 is probably my favorite brush gun.
I'd leave the 223 alone. If you want a short 243, look at the #1 sporter, it has a 22" barrel, same as the #3. It's available in 243. My friend has one in 270. Its a real pretty gun, and shoots well.

Dave its been my experience in the past that by the time I get through with a rebarrel I have nearly as much money invested as if i were to purchase another gun. I think that for a little more money you would have two rifles.  Or sell the 223 to get the 243 if you feel the 243 is that much better. Best of luck. POW

I'll have to agree with the others.  Keep the Number 3 in original caliber or sell it.

It's become a collector's item.  As you know, Ruger stopped making the Number 3 almost 20 years ago.  Let someone else enjoy it if you simply HAVE to have short, light, handy Number 1 in .243 Winchester.

Re-barreling is an expensive way to get a non-standard rifle.  Re-boring is just as pricey.

I have two No 3s.  One is a .223 rem and the other is a .22 khornet.  Both are accurate and fun to shot.   I also have a number 1 in .270 Winchester.

They are beautiful guns!
