Author Topic: Scope for a Sako 75 7mm STW (Read 1151 times)

Just purchased one of these a few weeks ago and it is time to scope it. I would like this as a dual purpose rifle for Elk,MuleDeer and Whitetails. I absolutely love the Nikon Gold 2.5-10x50 scope but don't think it will be practical on an Elk hunt especially involving horses(Objective size fitting in the scabbard). My Choices are Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10x44 and Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40 . I think the Zeiss would be better in low light conditions involving Whitetail . Any other ideas?

I can't speak to the Leo scopes, but do have the Zeiss (as does one of my friends) in the 3.5x10x44. We both would buy another one w/o question. I have used mine for whitetail and Antelope. My next scope will be another Zeiss.

Though I've owned numerous Leupolds over the years, I now like the Zeiss Conquest better. I've got two and they've held up just fine for 3 years now on my .300 Wby and 7mm Rem mag.

I have the Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x40mm and it is a very good hunting scope. You still may be able to find one on closeout. I don't know if I really need the new features of the VX-III, but I'm sure they are a good scope as well. I looked at the Conquest and even though the eye relief is relatively constant it is more critical than that of the Leupold. Many people really like the Conquest and the Bushnell Elite 4200, but I found supremely better target acquisition and sight picture maintenance with the Leupold. To each his own I guess. JMHO.

Jackfish, I have used Leupolds for a very long time. Everytime I buy other brands whether Euro or Japanese for some reason the initial view thru the scope is not as instant as that of a Leupold and in most cases I end up switching them out for Leupolds. Bushnell products are completely out of the picture especially with this things recoil . I also appreciate the extra eye relief. I played with a Conquest 3-9x40 a few months ago and really was not satisfied with it other then its great optics and ended up dumping it on Ebay. I would hate as heck to buy a Conquest 3.5-10x44 and mount it on the gun and find I don't like the sight picture either. I acknowledge the better glass on the Conquest but everything else about it does not make me feel it is better then a Leupold.

One evening at closing time in front of a local gunshop, the salesman and I took out a 3.5 - 10 X 44 Conquest and the New 4.5 - 14 X 40 Leupold VX III. Looking at a sign about 250+ yards down the road in a light on and off misty rain. I found the Leupold to be crisper and brighter than the Conquest. I also noticed faster target aquisition at first glance threw the optics.

This is just my opinon but I would go with the leupold unless I got a still of adeal on the conquest.
One of my Co workers purchased a Conquest for his 270 and loves it in the late evening hog and deer hunting.
When I told him about my test he said bull! But he also has not looked at the new leupold VXIII.

ercjr2001, I looked through a new VX III, off and on for about 2 months before I decided to sell it. I was just basically underwhelmed by it (3.5-10x40). I use the term "underwhelmed" I guess because I expected to be blown away by the new Leupold based on the hype. I thought the VX III and the two Conquests were practically the same in terms of brightness, but I felt the Conquests offered substantially better resolution. I had no problem aquiring targets with either. I compared them numerous times in different light (dusk, midday, etc...) and on various objects including a USAF resolution chart.

I guess we all see something a little different when we compare optics.
Based on my observations and those I have read about here it seems you can't go wrong with any of these top brands.
I guess the thing to do is find the best bang for your buck and pull the trigger and buy what you preffer as an individual.
A good hunting buddy told me, premium optics are premium optics and they all run aclose race so pick what best suites you.
