Author Topic: ANY IDEAS ON THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF A PARDNER RECEIVER.....? (Read 1353 times)

I'm considering getting a Huntsman barrel for my Tracker II, 12ga. I already have a 28"MOD & 32"FULL barrel. I'm not sure that I'm actually going to put a couple thousand rounds through these barrels on this receiver over the course of time, but I could come close, especially if I do much trap shooting with it. Currently I'm shooting 100 rounds a week with my trap gun, with once in a while use of the Pardner.

Maybe my question is, "What is it that wears the most on these guns? Is it the frame itself, or is it the hinge pin and/or barrel hinge lug?"

The other possiblilties would be to get a Hunstman added to my 7mm-08, which I kind of want to keep separate, OR to buy a complete Huntsman.....

:shock: Actually, now as I write this, I realize that the Huntsman bbl and accessories I want to order would come to about $125 total, incl. shipping back and forth, when I could get a complete Huntsman in the shop for $149!

I know that many of you know what it is like to drive oneself crazy like this!!!!

I don't know about the longevity of the Pardner SB1 frame but I wouldn't worry much about it...Heck, these guns are dirt cheap. I would opt for the entire Huntsman gun and keep it completely separate...Much easier than changing barrels if you want to shoot both guns at the range. Although it really isn't too hard to change the barrels...I'm just talking convenience here.

I always keep a little remoil on the hinge pin and barrel latch ledge, as well as the ejector, so wear shouldn't be much of a concern. Very little blueing has worn off my hinge pin from the use I've given it, but in time I know it will. But with the oil it'll be slow. To actually wear the oiled metal will take longer than my life time. I imaging the ejector spring, barrel latch spring, hammer spring, etc will wear out before any of the rest of the mechanism.

Oil is your friend. :wink:

I agree with Scruffy here...I actually use some of the Militec-1 Grease on hinge mechanism to keep things all loose in there. I just started using it because I ordered a free sample from them. It's not much but it will allow me to sample what they have and if I like it I can order more.

I have a 20 ga Topper I bought in the early 70's probley haven't shoot it like you are going to but it has brought down a lot of squirrels and rabbits it looks like it still has a another 30+years.

I used to hunt with an old guy when I was a kid that used a acient H&R that had no extractor. He'd throw a 20 penny nail down the barrel to knock the empty shell out. The origional stock got broken when he was a little kid and replaced with a home made job fabricated from a pear tree. it was an old gun when that happened and he was in his 70's when I hunted with him. He rarley missed and taught me more about hunting than any body else thus far in my life. He ha a few expensive guns that were given to him as gifts but always hunted with the H&R. Except for when we were coon hunting I never carried anything else when we hunted together.

i have no direct experience in wearing out a handi but a friend of mine uses a 12 gauge pardner he bought in 2001 for $89 at dick's sporting goods for winter and summer trap league. he shoots at least (at a minimum) 2 rounds of trap a week so he's put at least 8,000 trap loads through it. it still locks up tight and the trigger is still good. go figure ?!?

it's cool to watch him shoot AA next to the perazzi and kolar dudes !

his only complaint that i know of is that he can't shoot doubles.

I bet that drives the guys nuts that paid $2000 for their shotguns and your buddy didn't ever break $100.

well, i have some experience with a handi breaking. i went out to shoot up a bunch of 30-06 cast bullets for the postal match yesterday after things cleared up. the first shot went off fine, i hit the post card, thought how good of a shot i am, and loaded the second round. Click !, hmmm, try again, Click, try another round, Click !. geez. figured i must have got a bad batch of primers.

i noticed ther firing pin was sticking out after i opened the gun up. it floated freely and i could shake it out too.

after 3 years and probably 1000+ rounds, i have a bad firing pin. so off it goes tomorrow to NEF for repairs and maybe another barrel. the sad part is that can't use it for the postal match and i wanted to shoot 357 mag and 30-06. i tried to buy another 357 handi at two gun shops but they couldn't find one. anyone know who has one in stock ?
