Good fast load wanted, all input welcome, .223.
« on: April 23, 2004, 07:49:43 PM »
Hey there everyone, all ya got to do is list your favorite load for the .223 handi gun ( or whatever ya got, as long as its not dangerous for me to try out of my handi), what is the fastest load that you guys have found using 55 gr bullets to 40 gr bullets. Anybody here use IMR 3031? Right now I'm using (i'll have to check my notes to verrify this but) I'm pretty sure that its 25.3 grs of 3031 (IMR) and a 40gr hornady balistic tip moly coated bullet. Gona test it out on some prariee dogs tomorow. So shell out the info! Thanks, Henry.

27.5 grains of Varget, 50 grain V Max (moly) Lake City Brass and Federal SR primer.  I'm getting 3270fps avg velocity out of this load and it is pretty accurate.

*This is a max charge so work up to it slowly in your gun*

you should be looking for the most accurate load for your rifle.more offen than not it will be a max load when dealing with 221,222 and 223 rifles.the varget and blc-2 powders are good for the 223s

I was using W748 for my .223 NEF Handi. It worked fine but is a dirty powder. I have since switched over to Benchmark powder. It is cleaner, fouls less AND is very accurate in my NEF. My current load is 24.7grs....LC brass.......CCI BR4 primers.......55gr Hornaday SP...oal of 2.300. I did find that when I use Benchmark, I must be accurate when I measure the powder. one tenth in weight does make a difference. I love my NEF 223.

I vote for max loads of BLC-2 (worked up to, not just yanked out of the manual ) with 50 and 55 grain bullets.  I'd vote for varget too but have never chronographed it and have not been able to get a "max" charge of varget into my Rem cases.  Maybe a drop tube?

Longcruise, I have to use a drop tube, plus tap the case as I pour it in order to get 27.5 grains of Varget into my cases.

Wlscott,  Thats what i figgered, a drop tube.  Most that would drop and fit out of my measure was 26 gr.  Was an ok load though.

Varget is a great all around powder.  Except for 4895 it's probably my most oft used powder.

I have good luck with 26.5 gr H335  under a 50 gr. Sierra Blitz with winchester cases and Remington benchrest primers. When I go over 26.5 gr. I start getting extraction problems.
