« on: April 24, 2004, 05:51:24 AM »
Hi fella's
I got my new s.s 7mm-08 encore w/comp stock.Would like to know what scope works good for you guys. This gun will be used for my first year hunter son who will be 12 in october.I have been looking at Nikon 3-9 scopes in probably a matt finish.I'm not sure what base and rings should go well with it.Did I hear that the hammer could get in the way of the scope? What height rings should be used?Any pertinent info is greatly appreciated. You guys ARE the people to ask!

Scope for Encore

I just put a Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x on my SS 243 Win. Encore barrel. Great scope and great value. I used a Leupold base with Leupold dual dovetail rings (medium height). I've also had good luck with Weaver bases and rings. A lot of guys use the Weaver base with Burris Signature Zee rings. Mike

Ditto on the Leupold base/rings.  The Nikon Monarch is a great scope, as is the Bushnell 3200 for the money.  The scope hammer space should not be a problem unless he is going to wear gloves.  Then the spacing is kind of tight to get a thumb in there.  There are extentions that you can get for the hammer that stick out the side.  I have never felt I needed one but you can see what you think.

Just bought a Nikon 2-7x32 shotgun scope that fits perfect on my Encore carbine.

My advice is to buy quality, the Trophy line from Bushnell has worked well for me. I have the 3-9x40 Trophy Mil-Dot on 2 Encore Barrels and an NEF in .308.

I can't prove it but I swear the snapping action when you close the breach on the Encore destroyed a Tasco Mil-Dot and a Bushy Banner 4-12. Neither were on hard Kickers (250 Sav and 22-250 Respectively). So that is all I can come up with except that they weren't the toughest scopes to begin with. Sean.

I prefer a Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 in a set of Warne medium height rings.  Tough as nails set up and has worked like a charm for me.  No problem with hammer access with medium height rings.

just bought a leupoled rifleman scope 4X12 at walmart. Great scope!! You can get the rifleman 3x9 for $199 and for the money that is what I recommend! The Nikon would be second then bushnell. The rifleman scope is a great scope at a great price. :D

I think you would be happy with any leupold, the bushnell elite 3200, the weaver grandslam, upper end burris scopes, middle to upper end nikons,  or simmons aetec's.

I highly recommend the hammer extensions.  Makes life much easier, especially in the event that a new shooter needs to de-cock the hammer.
I would go with the one's from Virgin Valley as they are made from aluminum and shouldn't weaken the hammer spring over time.

Smoky

Congrats on  getting your son out for the hunt !!!!
You don't mention what you will be hunting ? or what type of terrain ? It makes a big difference  If you are hunting deer in the woods(2-7x) at short range you need allot less magnification than if you are hunting in the open areas(4-12xor 4-16x) . In optics you pretty much get what you pay for .
I use a weaver base with burris zee signature rings , I usally get a 40mm objective or less and use medium height rings.
