Redhawk vs super Redhawk
« on: April 24, 2004, 03:12:54 PM »
I own a rh 5.5" which I really like, and use it as a carry gun in the field. I want to get rid of my Taurus 8+" m44 and thought of replacing it with a 7.5" RH which I would put a red dot on it. In looking at the Ruger line the $ is the same for a RH as a SRH. Ruger grips are to small for me and would be replaced. Any one have some info on these two gun in a comparison?

the only real difference is the scope mount system with the s.r.h.  the frame is different on the s.r.h. too; bu i think it comes down to if you are intending to scope it or not.   i like the cosmetic look of the redhawk better.  i wish ruger would make a redhawk with a full underlug; i dont much care for the underlug the way they make them now.

The RedHawk has a somewhat sophisticated trigger and hammer spring arrangement that allows one spring to work on both of these pieces.

The Super RedHawk has a separate spring for the hammer from the trigger, and its laid out like the lockwork and trigger group in a GP-100.

I don't like the Super' size-wise; but admit that it's engineering is very basic.    I like the looks and the size of the RedHawk.    For handling recoil I put on a Hogue Mono-Grip and it works Very Well.

I think some people will tell you that the Super' gets a little more attention from the craftsmen/workers at Ruger, but I can't see where after working with a RedHawk.

Take care.

After having both (and both of mine had scope mounts, Redhawks are available set up for scopes) I would go with the SRH.  It is a better gun in every are in my opinion other than looks.  The Super is butt ugly.  I just think the Super handles better and shoots better, but that is just my opinion.

I like the grip on the Redhawk better than the grip on the SRH.  The Redhawk grip "rolls" with the recoil 8)  better.

The Redhawk has a unique action all its own and completely different from anynother revolver. It also mounts the scope on the barrel.
The Super Redhawk has the extended frame so the scope mopunts on the frame and makes the revolver even more sturdy then the already massive Redhawk. The action on the SRK is the same as on the SP101 and the GP100 series guns and disassembles similar to both of those guns its simply a bigger version in the new Ruger Doubleactions. I prefer the action of the SRK as well as the scope mounting system. I have a 7.5 and hope to have it cut to a more handy 5.5 length and have it Mag-Na-Ported it should be a much handier gun at this length and very usefull as well.

My only input is regarding your selection of .44 Mag as your caliber of choice.  The Redhawk, with pachmeyer grips handles full on .44 Mag loads easily without beating up the shooter (sure surprised me).  The built in scope mounting system makes it my choice.  IMHO, the Super is overkill for the round.
