POA problems .17 @25yds!!!
« on: April 25, 2004, 01:48:32 PM »
:gun4: I ran into a couple of 'problems' in my opinion...
i have a sportster .17 solid weaver mounts, weaver med.high rings, Tasco W.C 9-24x w fine crosshairs and a realy fine dot, with a 12" sunshade and in my eyes a nice rig.
 with a 100 yd zero ,I am 1.25 in. high @25
                                      1.75in. high @75
                                      0.00            @100
                                        .25     low  @125
                                        .50     low  @150
                                       1.00    low  @175
my problem is that i think 1.75 plus or minus within 100 yds is alot to mess with with possible quick 100 yds or less shots. I can not fit smaller rings due to obj. size it will hit. has anyone else encountered this?
or will i have to settle for 100 yd shots..
my setup is mostly for crows and feral pigeons in farmers fields so please dont hammer me on the ranges. ive taken crows out to 265yds clean, and 12 lb wood chuck at close to 200,he just hummped up took a realy long ssttrreeetching steps then fell on his belly!
my center of scope to center of my bore is 1.85" ! is this too high?

I"m not sure whether this will help, but here goes...

I have a cheap 3-6x Bushnell on my .17 Sportster, sight height 1.5". POI are:
25yds: .7" low
50yds: 0.0
100yds: .7" high
200yds: 4" low

The range I go to doesn't have measured points for 150 or 175 yards, but a "best guess" would put it back to zero somewhere thereabouts. These numbers are fairly consistent with what others have been getting with this round when I checked other forums and a couple of articles. If I zeroed it at 100yds, I'd be 5" low at 200, which is not consistent with the numbers you're getting. Are you getting these figures consistently? The difference in sight height may explain some, but the ballistics themselves don't match. Perhaps between what you and I are getting, someone else can help here...

As a follow-up, the following link may help figure where your POI should be with a given round.

Good luck; hope this helps...
