New .17
« on: April 26, 2004, 05:08:41 AM »
On Saturday I ordered my new sportster! I decided to go with the .17
and add a .22 mag barrel later. I had to order from a local gun shop
instead of wally world. I would have saved some money but I don't
trust their ability to deliver it to me. So the price was fair and I did it.
One question, to clean my .17 I will need a new brush for the bore but do
I need a smaller diameter cleaning rod? And also a smaller swab?
I currently have  the old standard hoppes cleaning kit  which serves
me fine for my .22's but not so sure about my new .17. Thanks for the
help.

My .22 won't fit mine, so you'll probably have to get one specifically for the .17. Look for one that's coated so it won't scar up the bore. Also have to cut down patches a bit; it's a mighty small bore! Haven't tried a bore snake yet, but that may be one way to go.
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

You will need a new cleaning rod and attachments. I highly recommend a .17 caliber Hoppe's "Bore Snake" for the 17 instead of a cleaning rod. Use it from the breech to the muzzle. It works great and is all you will need. I also suggest using it dry. It has worked for well for me and I see no need to change at this time....<><....

Haven't used any in mine yet, about 250 rounds through it and it's getting more accurate each time I shoot it....<><....

When I was at Wally World, I picked up a cleaning kit for .17s and .22s by a company called DAC Gunmaster for $6.97, three-pice rod, jags, brushes polishing cloth and some patches included.

I found an even better solution, the PatchWorm. Very inexpensive and since I NEVER use a brush, nylon or otherwise in my barrels, very useful and bore friendly. 8)

I will second the patch worm vote! All I have used on mine, my 17 HMR is the most accurate rifle I own. Do buy a patch worm, you never have to worry about bore damage is easy and cheap, you will love it I promise.
