My next project

Remington Sportsman 58 . My 14 yr old son bought this with his birthday money to restore.
Barrel is 23" then 26 with the choke. Wood is OK & we will totally strip & refinish. Price marked was 79.95.
I paid a total of 75.00. Barrel says 2 3/4" only. this was Remington's first semi auto gas operated shotgun made from 1953 to 1967. I am donating the barrel from my 870 Wingmaster to this project. shipped it out today to a gunsmith in Mich. who will drill the port holes under the barrel ring for the gas operation to work. I will reblue the receiver which is in perfect condition. I like to find old rundown guns at shops, buy them for dirt cheap, and restore them to function & beauty. It is fun. My now 14yr old is loving it too. He had to have this when he saw it. Existing barrel is missing the choke piece on the end and is slightly bent at the 19" mark. I will cut it at the 18 3/4" mark and use or sell for cheap.

I agree...I need a hobby like that too...Don't think the wife would appreciate it though.  Heck, I don't even know where there is a pawn shop in my area.

Rogmatt, I like what you did to the old Stevens.  It looks great.  I'm sure your Rem 58 will turn out real nice too.  Bringing an old beat up gun back to life with your son is a great thing to do.  My 12 year old son and I have two Romanian Trainer rifles that we refinished, and I just picked up an old Remington Model 580 22LR that we're going to do too.  That Rem 580 shoots so nice that I don't want to take it out of service right now.  I guess we'll make that one a winter project.

Let us know how the Rem 58 turns out.

10-4. My wife gets reaaly upset when I get another gun. She sees it as a waste of money. Seeing it from her point of view it is. I will try to go the extra mile for her to get her some things she wants so she will be more understanding of my hobby. I tell her. These things will last forever if I take care of the, Our greatgrandkids will get them. (I am only 37)

Good idea...surprise her with a little something...that always helps if you want to start another project.

Don't forget to mention to her the quality time you're spending with your son...you can't put a value on that...

Beat up old Remington 58...$79
Refinishing supplies...$20
Time spent with your son refinishint it and shooting it...Priceless!

Do you think I can start using that excuse as soon as our baby is born?  My wife is due 6/16/04 so maybe I can start a project some time in the following months.  It would be quality time spent with a child...Even if the child will not remember a thing.
