30-30 AI
« on: January 08, 2003, 03:15:55 AM »
I need some help with loads for 30-30 Ackley improved.  I will be receiving a barrel in about 6-7 weeks and would like to get a general idea of how much more powder I can safely stuff in there.  I shoot AA2230C cause I have a bunch and an old timer that I know says the 2230 shoots in 30-30.   I will be shooting in a contender if that makes a difference.  For the most part I will not be pushing the pressure limits, just want something for information in case I decide to go hunting in the future.  Thanks for any help.  Dan

Wolfe Publishing put out a huge book on wildcats, one of which was the 30-30 AI.  He got 2500 fps in a 20" barrel, but complained of problems with sizing and bullet seating because the 30-30 case was so thin that it frequently buckled in the bullet seating procedure.  If you want to give me an address I'll copy and mail you a copy if you can't find one yourself.

Also Fin Agaard  tested a Clifton modified Marlin 336  30-30 AIin the American Rifleman some years ago, commented on the loading problems with the thin 30-30 case  and opined that the AI was not worth all the trouble for the modest gain in velocity

You should visit the Wolfe publishing web site. Wolf publishes Handloader adn Rifle Magazines, among other things.  If you sign up, you can obtain access to all of their past articles on handloading data.  I suspect you could obtain the foregoing article on line that way and probably a great deal of other useful information.

Good Luck with your 30-30 AI.

Dan,
I have a .30-30 AI Contender carbine barrel.I haven't shot it very much and have not used AA2230C powder but have used AA2520 and Sierra 110 gr HP's(#2110) and Sierra 125 gr Spitzer (#2120) with very good accuracy. The load was somewhat above published max for the standard .30-30 (which you would expect) with Rem 9 1/2 primers,Federal brass and bullets seated just short of the lands. My chronograph is down -AGAIN- so don't have any velocity data.
Maybe this will be of some help....
regards
        Dana

Totally depends on the bullet you select, and if you are talking handgun or rifle...

But basically, you will not see much difference...regardless.
