30-06 POWDER

If you were limited to only a 30-06 rifle and could only pick one powder which would you pick?  Remember only "ONE" powder for everything.

Picking one powder for bullet weights from 57 grains to 250 grains is NOT the reason for reloading...and it is NOT practical.

Maybe because I've not been reloading that long (about 4 years), but I am a one powder kind of guy.  I do a little research on the most popular and flexible powder for a particular round and I use it.  If I am pleased with the results I stick with it.  I have only ever used Varget for my 30-06 and have been very pleased with the accuracy and consistency.  I load from 125 gr varmint loads to 165 gr larger game loads and have been very happy with the results. <moa for every bullet I have tried.

I mostly load IMR 4350 behind 180 gr bullets in my '06.  It worked so good (accurate) back in the mid 70's that I've seen no need to change.  If I was just starting I'd take a good look at the Reloader series (#19??) which appears in many new manuals  to do very well in the '06.

probably 4895. It really depends on the action type too though. Maybe 4350 if you were talking bolt action only but for anything, including the M-1 it would be 4895.

Been using 4350 since the 50's in 06,and 3031 in 30-30 for same time frame---if ain't broke don't fix it.

For a 30-06 I would use IMR4064. I have used the same load for 25 years and it still shoot great.  :grin:

I have reloaded for 3 different 30-06 rifles.  Useed Reloader 19 and the accuracy was excellent in all cases.

I can remember years ago when it was said that the 30-06 and IMR 4350 were both created for one another!!  However I also like IMR 4831 ? IMR 3031 / IMR 4895 :-D  :D    JIM

Varget works the best for me. Maybe I'm cheap, or maybe I want a powder that I can use in all of my rifles.
I counted about 20 different cans of powder in my storage area, but I'll use the Varget before the rest.

165 grn hpbt and W760 gave .5" 3 shot groups with my 15" Encore.  Imr 4350 and H 4831 all stayed around a little over an 1"
