Anyone set up a 12" 44 Magnum Encore?
« on: April 28, 2004, 06:02:22 PM »
Anyone have an Encore .44 Magnum setup that they will describe for me.  I am thinking 12" barrel and scoped.  Wondering how it will shoot and if I can grow into it.  Will be used for hogs, deer and an occasional coyote plus just fun shooting.  I do not reload so factory ammo is a must for me.

Thanks!

Mike

I don't have one in 44mag but I have one that I shortened to 11" in 444 marlin. Great size for carrying around but it sure packs a wallop. I would think a 12" 44mag would make a great carry around pistol with plenty of power for hogs.  KN

I noticed that there were several used 10" 44 MAG barrels at the store where I bought my G2 frame.  I am just getting started and primarily interested in rimfires at this point.   However, I think I'd like a 44 MAG to be my first centerfire.   Didn't seem like a good testimonial to see so many used 10" 44 MAGs in the case though.  Anybody know what gives on these?

It seemed like there was some type of screw in rifled tube in the muzzle.  At first I thought they were 410/.45 Colt but double checked the labels to be .44 MAG.  Screw in choke on a .44 MAG?, I don't get it. Please enlighten me.

I see that Ed's Contenders has some 10" .44 MAG barrels with screw 'in chokes'  for CHEAP.

Bought mine in stainless yesterday and waiting on my new grips to arrive so I can try it out.

Thought about shooting it with the stock on it, but that would violate several federal and state laws that I cannot understand the genesis of.  Anyone know the history of why you can have a pistol grip on ANY length barrel but not a rifle stock on one under 16"?  Might be time to ask Congress to change that one!

Anyway, I will report back upon shooting and let you know about recoil and accuracy.  As I have reported, I intend to shoot hogs, deer and coyotes at 100 yards or less.

DTH,
The screw in chokes you speak of are for shooting the TC shot shells. They are similar to the plastic CCI ones but softer and much longer. The riflings in the choke stop the capsule from spinning and split it open.
My brother has one and he really doesn't like it very well as it kick's like H*ll compared to his 14" bbl and isn't as accurate. That choke is about 2" long so you really only have about a 8" bbl when shooting bullets.
Mike;
I don't have a 44 bbl on my Encore but have a 12" 454 bbl and like it very much. It isn't as front heavy as the 15 inchers and handles and balances a bit quicker and nicer. Can almost shoot it one handed. I don't have a scope on it at this time but it may get a 2X Leupold later on.

I have the 12" 44 mag for my Encore pistol and it is well balanced. Atop is a ProPoint 5 m.o.a red dot with zero magnification. It is zeroed at 50 yds with 300 gr cast lead handloads. I also have a Contender 44 mag in Super 14. I do appreciate the 12" length better and may cut down the Super 14 to 10". There is nothing wrong with all those used bbl's out there. Just a lot of guys buying and trading.

I am on the verge of purchasing my first pistol scope for my new .44 Mag in 12 inches.

I think I have the decision down to either the TC models or the Bushnell Elite 3200 Seems that the TC models are bright and durable but the Bushnell has constant eye relief.

They are about the same in price and warranty. I THINK I understand that you trade eye relief for field of view and a paper shooter would prefer the Bushnell's eye relief while a hunter may not.

SSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I guess it comes down to the eye relief issue and I need counsel from you guys which is most important. For the Busnell, does the non-constant eye relief mean you must always reposition the distance from your nose or do you just set it up at a certain distance and always shoot it that way?

I intend to hunt as much as possible with this gun and paper shoot the rest of the time. I hope to grow to be able to shoot it 100 yards over time.

Thanks,

Mike
