TC Renegade - load?
« on: April 29, 2004, 04:32:46 PM »
I have a TC Encore 209-50 and realize it will handle magnum (150 grain) loads.  I am looking at a used TC Renegade but cannot find a manual or information at the TC web site regarding the max. load.  How many grains of ffg is specified in the users manual for the Renegade?

Darwyn,

Looking in my reprint 9/1/88 T/C manual, that came with my Renegade some years back, it lists the following Max Charges for FFg Black Powder:

.50 cal Round Ball ( 175gr):............110 gr FFg

.50 cal Maxi-Ball (370gr) & Maxi-Hunter (355gr);............100 gr FFg

Darwyn,
If you weren't welcomed on you first post, let me take the chance to welcome you now.

Please remember that some substitutes vary in power and max is not always the best with patched round ball.

I wish you the best with your shooting

Just to add to Primer's info:  same book (mine is a mint original copy though   ) the 50 RB load is listed at 2135 FPS and 1883 FtLbs; the 50 Maxi load 1418 FPS and 1652 FtLbs - both with DuPont BP and BOTH IN THE HAWKEN.   Back then (1978) the Renegade only came in 54 cal if I remember right, and only in 50 now since its rebirth (correct me if I am up in the night on this pards).   All that said, "max" is seldom the best load in any frontstuffer anyway , so start lower and find your sweet spot.   At Rondy's I only give the 54 Renegade RB 50-60 of 2F and it is plenty accurate enough at the ranges normally shot.

Sorry I've been off line for a while.  Thanks for the welcome.  I went back and had another look at the Renegade.  It comes with two barrels.  The longer is 1:66? twist with it printed on the side.  The shorter one doesn't have the twist rate on it.  Both are stamped as actual TC barrels.  Any idea what the twist rate might be on the shorter one?  I looked at the bore in both barrels and they look clean but I am not sure what the rifling should look like - could you tell by a visual regarding wear or is this apt to be an issue if there isn't any corrosion?

you have to shoot a lot of loads to wear out a t/c barrel.  Take a lubed tightly patched jag on your ramrod and put it down the barrel.  Mark the ramrod next to the front sight and at the end of the barrel  Then pull the ramrod out letting it rotate until the mark is on the opposite side of the site.  measure the length of the rod removed from the barrel and times two

the unmarked barrel is most likely 1:48 as I believe all renegades were. the  1:66 is an accessory barrel for shooting roundball, though the 1:48 shoots roundball well too.
