S&W 629 4' or 5" Barrel
« on: April 29, 2004, 05:03:20 PM »
I have Ruger's RH and BH revolvers in 44 Mag and 45 Colt that I load for. I have never owned a S&W gun but have always wanted a model 29 44 Mag like Elmer Keith carried when they first came out.

I know Elmer's guns were blued with 4" barrels but I like the 629 stainless. I have found two dealers with one each. One has a 629 with 4" barrel and the other a 629 Classic with 5" barrel, both guns are around the same price $490.00 and $499.00. I will be using it mostly for carry when in the woods and maybe to hunt deer, hogs with. I just can't make up my mind which one to get, the 4" or 5".  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks Bill

Add  $100.00 to each of the 629's - $590.00 and $599.00.

There really is no reason to chose one over the other based on the 1" difference in barrel length. Personally I don't much care for less than 6" barrels on a gun for hunting use but short is a bit handier to tote. With a gun this large and heavy tho you'll never know that extra inch or two is there. In fact I have found 4" N frame S&Ws don't carry as well for me as 6" or 8-3/8" in a belt holster. They are so top heavy it really is an uncomfortable carry to me.

The older 6" or 6.5" barreled guns before they put the underlug on the carry best for me in a belt holster.

I wouldn't pay that price for either tho to be honest. That's easily over $100 more than I'd pay.

I live in the Atlanta, Ga. area and all the S&W 629's  I have seen are close to $600.00  or more. I would buy one in a minute , or maybe two, if I could find them in the $400.00 to $500.00 price range.

Where do you guys buy your 629's ?

Thanks Bill

The 5" have a history of being better balanced than both the 4" and the 6" for hunting I would sugest the 5" but if you just want one to carry then look for a 44 mountain gun its got an even lighter 4" barrel but kicks a bit more. The best way to choose is pick up one in your dominate hand and hols it sight it at an object(check to see if its empty first of course) then pick up the other and do the same thing. Pick the gun which feels the best in your hand. the one thjat balances the best in your hand is the one to choose. Personally my 629 is a 6" but given your choice would be the 5" gun. but thats just my personal opinion take it for what its worth.

WBill:  as Greybeard said, there's not much difference, or not enough to make a difference between 4 and 5" bbls but I found a while back that with the 6" S&Ws I had, continual wear in the field wore a hole in my hip and became uncomfortable to carry.  With that in mind, I sent both a 6" 357 Highway Patrolman back to S&W for a 3.5" bbl and a reblue, and then sent my 6.5" 29-2 back for a Mountain Gun (4") bbl and am very happy with the results.

Deaf Smith's advice is very, very good and I would recommend doing as he suggested.  When I was looking for single action cowboy type revolvers for general field work I hefted both a 4 and 5/8" and a 5.5" revolver to see which one fit and felt better in my hand and how the sights presented.  I was a bit surprised by my choice because seven though I preferred the looks of the shorter bbl, the slightly longer bbl felt better and came to its sight picture more readily.

With Greybeards advice that there is little (ballistic - my point) between the two barrels it will come down to your choice of feel, fit and sight picture.  Good luck and let us know what you decide - both are excellent choices.  Mikey.

Chris:  no, I didn't chrono the handguns after those two changeovers to shorter barrels.  I figured that I had lost some velocity but considering the way I use those two handguns, for 50 yds or less (unless I have an absolutely clear shot farther out), any velocity loss wouldn't matter much.

As it now stands, the 200 gn cast swc load I use in the 357 will penetrate t&t a whitetail chest out to 75 yds - done that.  I've also used that load on a 175 lb doe and it broke through the shoulder girdle and penetrated the chest, exiting soft tissue between two ribs.  With the 44 magnum, shooting 265 gn hornadays I have had the same, if not better experiences.  I'm trying to save some wrist life and will go to a 250 gn Keith style swc over a load of 2400 or 296, expecting the same results.

I know that I have lost some velocity from the 357 - I tried those loads on the sily-wet range post barrel change and found that I had to raise my sights another click at each marker with those loads, which indicated some velocity loss.  I had to do the same once a number of years back when going to an accuracy load for the 200 gn 357 - I went from using the 296 load to using a 630 load that mirrored the velocity of a 4227 load for that slug.  The velocity difference was about 150'/sec or so and one additional click of the sights brought the poa to poi, or at least high enough on the metal targets to knock them over.  HTH.  Mikey.

Chris:  I think the expected norm is about 50'/sec loss per inch of shortened barrel.  I think I recall reading that in a Jamison article once.  Mikey.

Chris:  actually, I found the shorter barrels to have a better sight radius or length for me.  They came to the eye more quickly and the front balde centered in the rear square more rapidly with both shorter barrels.  It also seemed easier to get a good sight picture on distant targets.

It used to be an old axiom that the main reason most police officers were issued 4" barrelled revolvers is that the 4 inch minimized error more than the 2" or 6" barrels did.  I've noticed that myself when using those revolvers for defensive shooting - they seem to be much easier to control and hold on target when not using the sights, as in a defensive shot at very close range.  They also seem to sit in my hand better.

I have a pretty steady hand and the 4" barrels feel and sight much better for me.  I can't advocate that for everybody but it works for me.  A good test might be to find one of what you have with a shorter barrel and see if the dealer or owner will let you handle it.  HTH.  Mikey.

Revolvers I've owned or own:
2" barrel Taurus Model 85 38 Spcl.
3" barrel High Standard 22 Mag
3" barrel S&W 696 44 Spec.
4" barrel S&W 66 357 Mag
4 5/8" barrel Ruger Blackhawk 357 Mag
5.5" barrel Ruger Redhawk 44 Mag
5.5" barrel Ruger Single Six Magnum 32 H&R
6.5" barrel S&W Model 624 44 Spcl.

For concealed carry I'd pick a 2" to no more than 3" barrel.
For trail carry in the woods I'd pick a 4" to no more than 5.5" barrel.
For hunting I'd pick a 5" to 7.5" barrel.

Best compromise length in my opinion is a 5" barrel.

I went with a 4"
« Reply #10 on: July 20, 2004, 04:13:26 AM »
I recently got a 4" 629 for field carry and really like it.   I normally wear it in a a shoulder rig and its about right for power/weight/packability ratio.  A shoulder rig makes more sense for me because a lot of the time I am wearing it I am either fishing or snowmachining.  It wouldn't do me much good if I couldn't get to it under my waiders or snow pants.  I've been very pleased with how mine shoots so far too.  It will shoot a 300gr WFNGC cast bullet at 1300fps into a 3" 25 yard group off hand.  THe only thing I did was to ad a set of ahrends finger groove grips to it.  really feel nice in my hand and don't seem to catch on quite as much stuff as the hogue factory grips did.  I would probably get the one that feels better to your hand.

cknight-  thanks.  I really like them myself.  They fit my hand pretty good.   I got these grips for $40 and for the money the fit and finish is really good.  I would recomend the Ahrends grips to anyone.

I'll have to disagree with GB on this one. To me there is a world of difference between a 4" and a 5" barrel in feel and balance as well as recoil whether real or perceived. I much prefer 5" tubes for hunting. 6" barrels just feel too long to me. They also carry much easier on the hip and are faster on the draw if needed. They are the perfect compromise. Well known outdoor writer Skeeter Skelton was a fan of 5" barrels and much preferred them to 6" models and I always liked him....... so there! :-D

It's been Dual-trapezoid ported my Magna-Port,.. and that's a Redfield 5-Star scope mounted on her with Patchmyer grips. She has downed many a deer!

Within the last two weeks I've traded for a used 629-4 Mountain Gun. Couldn't be happier with it. And is every bit as accurate as my 6 1/2" classic that I deer hunted with last season. I've only shot some pretty heavy loads in it and no special loads, load of 21 gr of 2400 under Lyman 429421. Hope to work up a shot load for the spring bow fishing season for carp. Like to have something with me if I would run into a moccasin or copperhead. Probably around here I'll use a load of 429421 over about 7.5 gr of Unique. Haven't decided on grips yet but am looking seriously at Herretts Jordon Troopers.

I'd suggest you try the Speer 44 shot capsules in 44 Mag case.  I've had good luck with them in 38/357 mag.  Make it a bit easier to reload too. :D
Take care and keep you powder dry.  :D

You must a dealer yourself, to buy on the net? Either that or you pay a dealer to complete the deal and receive the gun. It's against the federal law for anyone not licensed to receive gun through any shipping system.

So, WBill, what did you get, the 4" or the 5"?

I personally like the 5" myself, but us inquiring minds want to know. :-D

PS  I buy on the 'net too.

Sounds like you've got a pretty good load for that 4" there! Is that a Cast Performance bullet you are talking about?

Care to share some additional data such as powder & weight?

I've been trying to come up w/ an efficient 240JHP-XTP load recently for my 4" 629. I've been using medium fast powders like n340, n350, & aa#5. The accuracy potential is there, but I feel a little short changed in the velocity department - so far anyway.

Thanks in advance!

WBill, I wanted a 4" myself, but the 5" Classic has the interchangable front sight setup on it so that`s what I bought. Extreme accuracy and the tightest lockup compaired to any other S&W or Ruger double action revolver I own. I love mine.

Have you changed the front sight?
If so, to what?
I never liked the red plastic insert in the front sight, or the white outline in the rear sight.
I just bought a 629 Classic with 5" barrel, to compliment my 625 .45 ACP with 5" barrel.
I am thinking of switching the 629 sights to the 625 configuration of a Patridge (black post) front sight, and a solid black rear sight.
I am 51 and now need reading glasses, so maybe a gold bead front sight would be even better.

Hello Ironfoot, I did change my front sight because the red insert that came with my new 5" classic was too high at .250" so looking in Brownells catalog I saw Wiegand fiber optic and red insert blades at .200" so I bought both. They are the right height now.I`m 52 so I know about aging eyes.Had 20/15 vision my whole life untill one day when I was about 46 I couldn`t read the small print anymore so we have bi-focals now.I like the fiber optic bead alot.Ican see it good in the indoor ranges with the low light the seem to all have and out side it`s great. The gold beads cost too much I think for what they are and in brite sunlite, if they act like the brass beads on my Marlin rifles, they reflect the light wierd so I can`t tell where the center of the bead is.I can`t seem to see the exact sight I bought a few years ago in this #57 Brownells catalog but others make fiber optic inserts for the  classic. I think Weigand has a web sight. I`ve also read on other forums in the past that they changed the rear square notch blade to something that had a round notch or something and they really liked that but I couldn`t  find anything like that yet. The square notch works great for me now. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.
I have not used fiber optic sights.
I was surprised you liked them even in low light.
I didn't think they were supposed to work well in low light.
I will look at them closer.
Below is Weignd's website, if anybody is interested.
