Here is what I shoot. Any one of these I would recomend to anyone.

617 6 inch 6 shot.....25 yards....1" groups
Single six 5.5".........25 yards....1.5" groups
FA 97 5.5"...............25 yards....5/8" groups
MKII 6 7/8".............25 yards....3/4" groups

All of these are with winchester superX.

Smith 617 4" with a Burris 2x scope. Deadly on chipmunks in our garden, and compact enough to ride with it in a hip holster.

I prefer the 617 over the single six for a few reasons:
1. more accurate
2. loads and unloads easier
3. there is just something about the feel of a nice double action
4. DA revolvers point more naturally for me
5. S&W single action trigger pull is better than the single six trigger pull

I'm not sure of the price difference. One good thing about the single six is that you can get a 22 magnum cylinder if you want.

As far as the two autos you have listed... I prefer all steel guns.

I always seem to lose sleep over such decisions as you are trying to make. Ya better hurry up and decide before sleep deprivation causes you to make the wrong choice! :grin:

I know you're a revolver guy, but in a rimfire to be used for squirrels, no revolver gives you a faster second or third shot than an automatic. As much as I love revolvers, when it comes time to stalk some bushytails or bunnies, I grab my Buckmark every time. It packs well in a cheap holster, the sights are finely adjustable, and mine is deadly accurate. I currently have mine scoped with a 4X Simmons, and it groups into about 3/4" at 25 yards all day long. When I get bored I shoot wasps at 35 yards. Just set out a can half full of cream soda, and get ready! Way too much fun.

Just my pair of pennies.

Of the 22 handguns mentioned the ones I presently own are the Ruger Single Six 5.5" stainless and the MKIIs in 5.5" and 10" in blue. Also own a Smith 41 5.5" but that is my target gun and costs as much or more as a Single Six and MKII combined. Also have a couple of the TC 10" match barrels which are rifle-like in their accuracy.

Used to own a Smith 617 - was the worst Smith I ever owned - the reason I now have a Single Six. This 617 was obviously a lemon - I have fired other 617s that were very good shooters. And as mentioned the single action trigger is better than that of the Single Six. Although the trigger on the Single Six can be greatly improved.

Since you mention light weight being a factor I the Single Six seems to be fairly light to me. Or a MKII with a tapered barrel - they still have the 6 7/8" tapered barrel which gives a longer sight radius , quick follow up shot and relatively light weight.

Good choice.....I have a 22/45 and Single-Six, both are great guns. The 22/45 is a very accurate gun... If you want to learn more about it and how to customize it, clean it, etc......try this site............

First off, here in PA it's not legal to hunt with a semi-automatic pistol, we are forced to stick with a revolver or single shot, so the 22/45 would not have been an option. Had I been in your shoes I would have leaned heavily toward the S&W for the smooth action and the better accuracy. I have owned a single six with the .22 mag cylinder, and my son currently owns one also with the .22 mag cylinder. I have found these guns to be ever so slightly less accurate than a good .22 double action revolver. Might be the story about the barrel being slightly oversize to accommodate the .22 mag or I may have been extremely lucky with my .22 double action revolvers. That being said, I probably would have been tempted to try a new single six hunter, simply for the ability to quickly pop on a scope, especially for squirrel hunting. I believe this gun, even with a scope, would have carried quite well in a bandolier style holster,and would not affect your ability to ride in on your mountain bike.

I got mine about a month ago and paid $264 including tax & out the door.
It is a fine little gun, and quite accurate.
Shame the Shooter is wanting(Me) I shot it in my first shiloette match Sunday and went 4-40(the hits were 3 pigs & 1 Ram) they were way out there. My spotter said I missed all 10 of the smaller shootoff targets by no more than a caliber( I think they are around 80yds) So the little gun is quite capable if driven properly.

I think you made a fine choice, even though I prefer the MKII (I just do not like the feel of the polymer framed 22/45), but that is a prefonal thing.

I just finished accessorizing my SS 5 1/2" Bull Barrel MKII Ruger. I added a Clark Custom Guns Trigger, Stoned the Hammer & Sear, added a Volquartsen Extended Bolt Release, and an On Target Guns Blast Shield. In addition I also purchased a couple sets of aftermarket grips (CLark Custom Guns and Volquartsen).

The Clark Trigger is a steel replacement that needs to be fitted to each individual frame. What this does, when done properly is to eliminate the excess side to side play that is common with the factory alluminum trigger. The Clark Custom Guns Trigger is also shaped slightly different and also features an externally adjustable over travel stop screw.

In accuracy testing this handgun I found quite a few different brands & types of ammo that would average 1/2" or slightly under for 5 shots at 25 yards from the bench using a 1" Illusion Red Dot Optical Sight.

The point I am trying to make is there is a lot of accessories that can be added to the Ruger's to make them a little more user friendly if the owner so desires. There are also some HiViz Adjustable Open Sights available that could be an aid in the darkness of the squirrel woods (especially for me with Open Sights).

Good luck with the 22/45, broken in properly I am sure it will give you years of service.

You're very welcome Chris. I first heard about them over at Rimfire Central and MarkII.org. I'll see what I can come up with. Natchez Shooters Supply lists the Williams FireSights for the Ruger's with both the 6 7/8" Tapered Barrel and 5 1/2" Bull Barrel.

Like you I have modified my Mark II extensively. One problem I had was the "blast shield" from on Target.

My gun would experience ftf at a rate of 10%! I removed the shield and no more problems. I contacted On Target and they sent me a new blast shield at no cost (and promptly)...but it had the same trouble.

I guess some Mark II's will work with this shield and some (mine) will not. On Target was very helpful in this situation and offered to refund $ if 2nd unit did not work, I simply did not follow thru with offer. They have a lot of good products and good service to boot. I write this to make others aware of this potential problem with this blast shield, not to soil the product line of On Target.

Afternoon Fred.

Seems I have read about others having this problem also. Can't seem to remember what the fix was, if it needed to be bent a little differently or what it was. You may want to post the question over at the MarkII.org forums and see if someone has had the same problem and was able to fix it. At least I think that is where I read it, just not sure.

I really like my MKII, but then it has special meaning to me. You see mine was my brothers and I purchased it from my Sister-in-Law after my brothers death. I did a few simple modifications and it seemed to make a great handgun even better.

The only problem with the Ruger MKII's is that they are kind of like Contenders or Lays Potato Chips, once you have one you want MORE. Currently I am trying to decide between a SS 4" Bull Barrel Ruger MKII or a SS 10" Bull Barrel Ruger MKII to add to the collection.

It sounds like an issue of self-control to me!

I can honestly say that I am quite satisfied to own only one Ruger MkII. My Competition model is so sweet that I could never dream of being unfaithful. I've been tempted to buy a High Standard, but then I shoot my Ruger and that compulsion fades away!

The best bullseye score I ever had was a 99 during rapid fire. It was using my Ruger MII slabside target model with volquartzen modifications. The good thing is that all improvements are easy enough for just about anybody to do themselves. This makes the gun more special, in my opinion.

I recently purchased a S/W M41 and installed quality red dot optics and still have yet to tie my 99 score from the MII. I am not saying that the Ruger is better than the M41, just that the Ruger is very good and will shoot better than most people can hold.

You have to love the Ruger Mark II.

Just to be contrary, I believe the best choice would have been the Single Six with both cylinders. I feel a lot more secure in the woods around here with something a little more potent than a .22 lr. The magnum cylinder in the Single Six gives you the luxury of effectively having two guns along.

You done good! SS top end, polymer frame...good choice.

Packing a gun on a mountain bike will subject it to dirt, water, mud, etc. Your new gun is configured to hold-up under those conditions. I'd probably contact On-Target too...and order/install a Volquartsen trigger assy. Those hi-viz sights that the guys are talking about sound great...since the stock sights seem to "disappear" in the woods.

Let us know how it works out for you...I'd really like to add one of these to my Ruger stable too.

I can only add one tip. (If you have the extra $$$)

See if you can find a Diamondback 6" in 22lr.
You go straight to the head of the class with that one!
They haven't been made for some time so look on gunsamerica.com

Ask anyone that owns one, top shelf & they last a LIFETIME!
