Hi All--
I've used the search function and have read quite alot of good advice. I have what's a fairly common question, but I thought I'd tell you the exact use I'd put a scope to and see what advice people might be able to give.
I just ordered a brand-new Remington 700DM mountain rifle in 7mm-08. Primary purpose is whiteail hunting. When the rifle comes in I will of course be scoping it, and my budget is about $200, give or take a bit. I hunt in central Maine, a combination of brushy swamps and long open meadows and cornfields. Thus I'd like a 2-7X scope (or something like it)rather than a 3-9. There are some close shots as well as some long ones out to a max of 250 yards (long for me, that is--grew up with shotguns and then for years my deer rifle was a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington with a Lyman #66 peeper). I've had to pass up some shots the last couple of years because I wasn't really confident much past 100 yards with the Marlin.
Anyway, for the 7MM-08, I originally thought I wanted a Leupold VX-1, but after reading all the comments here in the Optics forum and talking to the old hunter who works at the gun store, I'm seriously considering a Sightron. It seems like the Sightrons are new but doing really well so far.
I'd appreciate any comments or advice you all might have. Thanks for the great, informative forum. :-)
