HP Silhouette in Boise
« on: May 01, 2004, 03:35:07 PM »
I'll be moving to Boise, ID on or around June 1, 2004.  So far, I am unable to find any HP rifle silhouette up here and everyone I talk to doesn't know of any matchs.  There is plenty of cowboy, blackpowder and musket silhouette but that's not my taste.  I've heard there may some clubs around the Oregon border.

If you have any info please let me know.  This is getting desparate.

Try this website:  http://www.tsra.com/NRA_Sub.htm

The closest HP I found was Missoula.

Good luck.

There are HP and SB silhouette shoots in Lander, Wyoming.  I think they shoot SB in the morning and HP in the afternoon, or visa versa.  Roger Sebesta has been running the matches over there.  Good guy and good company.

I was hoping for something closer.  I believe there is a good HP program in Butte but that's still about 5 hours away.  That kind of distance makes me turn my head towards CMP.

SteelEye,

I don't know of any HP rifle done close to the Boise area.  We do shoot small bore and pistol cartridge Cowboy Rifle at the Nampa Rod & Gun Club.  We also shoot NRA Hunter Pistol and Small Bore Pistol out there.  We have an outdoor range where we do the silhouette and several other venues.  We have a 500 yard rifle range and also an indoor range that we shoot in all winter.

Send me a pm when you get here and I will hook you up if you are interested.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

SixGun,
I will be visiting the club to watch a CMP match.  I understand they have a good smallbore program and I will be eager to shoot it.  Found some info about Vale, OR.  Hope they have something up there.

Thanks,

They do have a gun club in Vale but I heard they were selling their silhouette targets.  I will ask around and find out what is going on over there.

Perhaps my troubles are indicative of the problems facing high power rifle silhouette, at least in many areas of the west coast.  With that in mind, I will be selling my hp rifle and joining the growning ranks of black powder cartridge silhouette shooters.  There is a range 20 minutes away.  They shoot numerous matches all over the this state and adjoining states.  More matches then possible to attend.

I'd much rather shoot then drive.

Good luck to you guys.

There is a guy, that shoots Black Powder Cartridge Silhouette, that shows up to our monthly matches.  Our next one is May 22 at the Nampa Rod & Gun Club, outdoor range.  If you are in the area then stop out there and maybe he can get you hoked up.

Now, since I hate to see a good victim slip out of my hands, Have you considered getting started up in either NRA Hunter Pistol or NRA Cowboy Rifle or both.

We have a really good facility at the Nampa Rod & Gun Club.  There is a covered firing line and the range is well taken care of.  It is minutes away from downtown Boise and anywhere west of Boise is closer.(Most of the population is west of town)  There is a great bunch of guys and all we need is more people.  We can accommodate 16 people on the firing line and we usually get 6 to 8 at a practice and a couple more than that at a match.

We have 2 practice matches every Thursday night starting at about 6:30 and shoot til dark.  Matches are every 2ed to the last Saturday, March through October.  In the winter we have our practice matches on the indoor range, every Thursday night.

We are pretty liberal as to what we allow new shooters to shoot.  You are safe to bring any 22 rifle and or pistol.  This allows you to see if you really want to do this.  If you don't have any of the above, we usually have a few extra guns around and you can borrow one to try.

Most of the guys end up with a TC Contender with a 10 to 12 in 22lr match barrel for Small bore Hunter Pistol and a 22 Hornet or 32-20 win for the Hunter Pistol matches.

We started Cowboy Rifle Silhouette 3 years ago.  It has really caught on and we have had some 38s and 39s shot on the outdoor range and two guys have got Grand Slams.  On the indoor range we have had several 40s.  It is nice to not have wind.

The prefered rifles for Small Bore Cowboy Rifle are any of the current manufacture lever action, tubular mag rifles.  We have guys using Marlins, Winchesters, and Henrys.  Any action, except bolt, with a tube mag is legal.  For the Pistol Cartridge Cowboy Rifle, most of the guys are using marlins.  Some are using Rossi 92sa and one guy has an original Win 92 rifle in 25-20.  Everyone else is using from 38 specials to 45s.  The main thing is we all have fun.  Again let me say that if you show up with a 10/22 and a big scope, you can shoot.  We only stick to the rules in a sanctioned match and the match director would probably still let you shoot along with any type weapon on match day.

Send me a PM and I will give you specific info on how to get ahold of us.

I was in the same situation 5 years ago and the club I joined was shooting other silhouette disciplines.  They let me run a different match IF I would do the Match Director job.  I would bet if you are willing the club will let you run a HP match if you do the work.  Give it a try!  Most Silly Wet matches fold up because of the lack of someone to run the match.  If you build it they will come  :-D   Besides it is faster to set up a match than to drive 5 hours to visit one that someone else is running.

I was invited to participate in a 500 meter practice shoot with the Ee-da-how Long Rifles in Kuna.  This is a black powder cartridge rifle silhouette club with strict rules about what can be used for shooting.

They sighted in a Browning Hi-wall 40-65 and handed it to me.  The first 2 shots at pigs were both knock downs.  Needless to say, I almost cracked my face with a big grin.  Couldn't hit anything after that and my shots at rams barely hit the side of the mountain.  Then I fired 5 rounds of 45-70 and was done for the day.   My shoulder still hurts!

I guess I would rather shoot black powder then not shoot at all so I am in the process of wrapping my mind around these big single shot  buffalo guns.  Eventually,  I will  probably cave in and get a lever gun too.  Silhouette is too much fun to be picky about powder and bullets.  Besides, the Black's Creek range is only 20 minutes away on a bad day.

I will probably show up at Nampa so I can shoot  a revolver which is my other obsession.  I have no intention of selling my lefty Cooper 57 so you can expect me for those events too.  As for starting up a club on my own, I think that option has already been supplanted.

Thanks for all the help with this one.  Just goes to show that silhouette is too much fun to give up unless you are...dead.

The only HP silhouette in our part of the world is Missoula, MT or Lander WY.  I live in Idaho Falls and the nearest match for me is Missoula.  5 hours down the road.  Lander is even farther.  I think you have to go to the Olympia area going the other direction.  Vale did shoot HP but that was many years ago.  If you find something, let me know.  I would like to shoot again.

Steeleye,

Funny I should stumble on this, the day after the Missoula shoot. See, I'm the highpower match director of the Missoula club. The silhouette match wasn't on the club schedule so I ended up watching the smallbore match instead of working on my target frames since I couldn't get downrange into my target shed!

I've only shot one silhouette match (a club centerfire match here in Missoo) but this smallbore looked like a ton of fun. No long walks, no heavy lifting.

The Missoula club shoots LOTS of black powder events, as does the Butte club. I can't advise what goes on in southern ID - I don't know. Pull up the Montana R&P Ass'n site for schedules of all disciplines throughout Big Sky.

Cheers,
