what am i doing wrong
« on: May 02, 2004, 08:04:14 AM »
I picked up a 220lfn mold for the .45acp off of ebay this mold seems to have a tappered base and has one small lube grove. The problem im having is that it wont lube right in my star. Ive tried about everything but i get lube all the way from the grove to the base of the bullet. Was this mold possibly incorrectly cut or should i try to seat a gas check on the tappered base to contain the lube. Ive tried a few different alloys thinking that the bases werent filling out but its the same. The mold makes beautiful bullets but there useless to me unless i can get them lubed. I considered lee alox but it makes such a mess in an auto. Can you point me in the right direction thanks

When I cut that bullet for a gas check, and with many other bullets which have a very limited bearing length, I cut a lube groove and check shank as one.  Probably you have a gc mold.  I don't stamp my molds with the base style, so am thinking what you call a tapered base  isn't a bevel base.  I cut many bevel base bullets for Star sizers, which cause no problems in lubricating them.

I cut all molds for Hornady checks if they are available for the caliber, which they are for most.  By the way, all current production Lymand and RCBS gc's are made by Hornady, and to Hornady specs.

50 cal molds are cut for Gator brand checks, and I'll cut for home made checks if sample checks are sent with the mold order.
