WHEW, FINALLY.....

Got my Handi back Monday with .357 and .44 barrels. Jan 14 to May 3, not too bad. Long wait on the .44 barrel. Now to take the .357 to the Max. :-)

Wow  that was a while.  Must have been the 44 barrel or maybe they lost you.  But it will be nice to take the 357 to the max.  I am waiting on the reamer from leftoverdj and then boom.
I must be crazy.

MSP Ret, I didn't look at the .44 but I did look at the .357 and it 'didn't' look like it was micro groove. Will look at the .44 and get back to you.

22khornet, it was the wait on the .44 barrel that took so long. They ran outta .44 barrels and were supposed to have more around the first of Feb. but looks like they didn't get them 'til the end of April.

I got a little impatient a time or two and called them, but what the heck I got 'em at least/last.

Maybe I can be next after you for the Max. reamer.

Let's do it that way, then.

308, send your addy to 22K so he can send it to you.

I've been lazy, but the reamer is within reach of my hand and I'll get it out to 22K this afternoon.

.308, I just got my new .357 barrel back from H&R about 2-3 weeks ago (took just about 4 weeks from when I sent it out to when it was returned, and it had a trigger job also!!) and my barrel is micro-groove....<><....

Hey msp ret, hows the throat on your micro groove 357 mag look?  Just thinking if someone (marlin) cut the rifling different maybe they cut the chamber different also.  :D

It does not look as if it is "long throated", in fact unfired new .360 DW brass has to be pushed the last little bit into the chamber and will not eject, has to be bumped out with a rod or assisted with the tip of a pocket knife. Standard .357 brass and factory loaded bullets however slip in and eject fine. Perhaps now that Marlin is making the barrels they have shortened up that notoriously long throat. Have not fired it yet, to busy around here right now....<><....   /  /

MSP Ret, I checked my barrels, they are both micro groove, dang it. :(

Leftoverdj, sounds like a winner. I'll p/m 22Khornet with my info. I don't remember, do I have your info so I can get you paid and get the reamer either back to you or it's next destination?

....so the 360 brass is too long...are ya going to ream it out so you can shoot it or are ya going to send it back to me...  soooo whats the micro-groove rifling going to do for the bullet selection for your gun????  :rain:

Hello Deadeye!!!, first I'm going to clean the chamber very well and see if its just grease from H&R that is the culprit, then I plan on shooting it with .357 ammo and checking it's out of the box accuracy. I then plan to clean the chamber again and retry the .360 brass. At that point (right now it is my plan anyway) I was planning to ream as little as possible from the chamber to make it a .360 DM and not a true .357 Max. Then to retest for accuracy and pressure signs with a short throat, if all is well it stays as it is then (hopefully). It looks to be a long fun project!!! I don't know if you saw my post but I got the 30 cal bullet mold about 2-3 days ago!!! I have not and will not forget you, would not want to get you upset, I hear you can shoot!!! If you saw the thread or not about a get together at my camp in Maine, you were invited. If things don't work out I will get the brass back to you. If you need it now I am willing to return it to you immediately, let me know. About bullet selection, I think cast bullets will work fine if the velocity is kept down, add a CG and you could boost the velocity a bit more. I thought I might use a good jacketed soft point bullet for hunting in the .357/.360 so the Micro groove should excel...<><....

Hello .308------glad to see you finally got your barrels back....I have one of the older .357s and 44s that appears to have standard rifling in it...If I had one with Micro-groove, I'd rather throw dough nuts at the target..ho ho..SB

I really can't figure out why some of you guys are so adverse to the Micro groove rifling, unless you want to have the older deep cut ballard style rifling to shoot soft (relative of course) lead bullets at higher velocities. It seems everyone agrees the most accurate Sportsters are those with the micro groove rifling but then dislike the Micro groove in the .357's and .44's. All my Marlins with Micro groove shoot exceptionally well, better in fact than many other rifles I have. I say give them a chance, develop a load for your rifle and you may be surprised what it will do. If velocities are kept down to a reasonable level with lead (ww or other alloys also) and CG's added if you wish to increase the velocity a bit then I believe the micro groove barrels will work fine, and with jacketed bullets they will far outshine the older style rifling....<><....

I too was only poking fun MSP Ret...the brass is your to keep..unless you really want to send it back...LOL I can't speak of the micro groove riflings accuracy. I have an old WesternField 30-30 (Marlin) that belonged to my dad and it shoots quite nicely but don't know if it has the micro-groove rifling or not. It is actually a very nicely finished gun and is a little beefier rifle than the Marlins of today. Good luck with your project....you certainly waited an aganozing long time to start it! :D

MSP,

Try resizing the .360 DW brass before you do anything else.  I think you will find the chamber doesn't like any flare on the case and the resized brass will fit just fine.  It also doesn't seem to like any roll crimp, so all I do is take out the flare and end up with a taper crimp.  I just increase the crimp until the cartridge will chamber and eject (a lot of times the case will chamber but not eject if it doesn't have enough crimp).  I chamber and eject every round before I call it a finished load.

The short throat doesn't seem to make any difference when I shoot .360's.  It will shoot 1" groups at 100 yards with 11.0 gr 800X, 180 gr Hornady XPT/HP (seated in the top cannelure) with CCI 400 primers in Starline .360 DW brass that has been taper crimped.

Of course, there were only two or three loads out of all I have tried that produced less than 1 1/2" groups, so I say the throat doesn't make any difference.

BBF, half an inch @50 yards sounds purdy durn good. Which bullet/powder combination are you using to get that. My plans right now are for mostly using cast bullets for plinkers and jacketed if I take it hunting.

BTW, S/B is a dough 'nut'.  :-D  :-D

308 I am useing 180 XTP HP over 20 grains H-110 with CCI small rifle primer. I could not be happier. I'm going to try and get a card shot this week for the postal match. I have been busey digging my new drain field for my septic system and have not had a lot of time to mess with it. Later

SR primers. best I could Measure 3 shot group was .64 in. That where
I run out of loaded Ammo. I want to try to get a card shot this week
for WLscott. Best to all Marv.

BBF, just so happens I have all those components on hand and will give them a try as soon as she's a Max (maybe I should call her Maxine rather than Max). I plan to take her out this week and run some .357 mag. rounds through her. Hopefully I'll get the Williams apeture sights on her by then.

Marv, next time I place an order for some bullets I'm gonna get some of those Remington 180's. Sound like they are doing the job for you.

Did either of you (or anyone else) do much shooting with yours before you converted them to Max?

Later,
