Is it legal for a 13 yr old to hunt with a handgun in PA?
Well from what I understand it is.  My grandfather got a permit to carry a handgun for protection. We got a book with it and I looked in there. It says I can as long as there is a adult.

Better make *SURE* *BEFORE* you go. Sometimes the wardens and judges don't have a good sense of humor about those things, esp. in today's political climate. Hunting with a handgun is an exciting challenge. Don't spoil it for yourself or others by doing something illegal or unethical. If all is OK, go for it after you've developed the requisite skills. Best wishes.

There are several different scenerios for handgun hunting. A Sportsman's Firearms Permit is required for concealed carry in the field or in a motor vehicle. A hunter under 21 cannot get one of these so there is one obstacle. The law doesn't state that permits or licenses can be shared. There is a lot of gray area regarding posession of a handgun for anyone under 21. A hunter sharing his handgun with a minor in the field is under different circumstances than at the shooting range. The target is moving and the distance varries so it remains very uncontrolled. A DNR officer that is having a rough time in the area where you hunt, might have a much different perspective in judging the safety and responsibility issue of a 13 year old having a loaded handgun. DNR officers also have the latitude to enforce criminal codes, especially when children are involved. I would hate to lose my hunting privleges for something like..."Endangering the welfare of a child", "Commission of a crime with a handgun", "Contrtibuting to the delinquency of a minor", etc.

Sure the 9mm is adequate for whitetails. So long as you give em' a double tap into the center mass @ spittin' distance. The deer should drop just like a perp. The 9's perfect.

Just kidding of course. I think you should call the PA Game Commission and recheck that info regarding 13 year olds and handgun hunting. If it's not illegal, it should be.

No offense intended. You don't drive to your hunting camp; do you? :-D

My answer to a 13 year old handgun hunting wound up in the wrong thread  Plus, I quoted the Pennsylvania Hunting Handbook on that one and I hunt within 10 miles of my house and yes, I drive. Otherwise it is illegal to have a handgun in my vehicle without a permit.....loaded or unloaded, unless going to the shooting range.

Do yourself ajnd the hunting community a  favor and  stay home with your 9mm. If you cannnot find enough written on the limitation of this cartridge, look in any good handgun hunting book!

Ok, time for me to chime in.

Your grandpa is licensed to carry the 9mm. By the way it sounds it is legal for him to carry the gun in the field as long as he has a deer license too. If you want to take a shot with the pistol for some reason, like if he was hunting by your side and you wanted to put a wounded one down, then it might be legal for you to use the pistol to shoot the deer.

I don't think any game warden would approve of you carrying it, especially without the licnesed owner right there. Using it for the first shot might be illegal and probably wouldn't be all that humane either. I wouldn't recomend it for anything but a finishing shot, and then it is lighter to carry an extra rifle cartrige than another gun for fininshing shots.

Gentlemen:  I think it is time for this thread to end.  People are strating to gnaw at each other rahter than to deal with the topic.

That being said, the 9mm is not the choice of caliber for whitetail hunting.  Other calibers are better choices.  Depending on the state involved, the 9mm might not even be legal.  Let's leave the 9mm to a more effective caliber of choice for whitetail hunting.  Thank you all.  Mikey.

I wouldn't use it. I had trouble finishing off deer with a 9mm I carried in law enforcement. With 147-grain bullets, it would work marginably if you hit them in the head just out of gouging range.
