Encore Pistol Barrels
« on: May 06, 2004, 12:30:33 PM »
I just bought the pistol rubber grip and forearm for my encore. I was thinking either a 270 or larger barrel for wild hogs and deer. I'm not to sure about the kick these barrels might have...I'm new to using pistols except for 22 or 38 cal..But a rifle cal in a pistol I think is something to think about and I don't want something I can handle. Has anyone tried these barrels before!!!

I am using that rubber grip and forearm with my 15" 30/06 Encore barrel.

Tell people it's really just a pussycat, but that you have to let it follow it's course after discharge and just hold on to keep from dropping it.  If you try to fight it, it will win and the recoil will be a bit.  Just flow with the recoil and hold on and it won't seem bad at all.

The rubber grips seem to make a big difference, as will shooting lighter weight bullets and lowering the amount of powder.

I have reloading dies for the 243, 270, 30-06, 300. I would like the 30-06 pistol barrel because I sold my 30-06 when I bought 2 encore's for my wife and I ( 243 + 270.) I'll probably go with the '06 instead of the 270 barrel. THANKS!!!!

I also load for .270 for a bolt action, and the 30/06 is much more versatile to load for.  You have a wider range of moulds to cast from and there seems to be a greater variety of bullets in .308 than .277.

Haven’t shot any cast in the Encore pistol barrel yet.  Will get around to it sometime.

There is another 15” Encore barrel that I would like to have, and that is a 35 Whelen.  That should be very versatile with a good selection of bullets available.

I guess my concern with the recoil would be just how accurate the caliber would be. Lets say 243 ver the '06. Out of the 4 caliber that you mention (7mm-08, .308, '06, 260) are you more accurate with one or the other being based on the recoil and the barrel raising up. 357's, 38's those are calibers mostly designed for pistols but on the other hand with the encore 10" or so barrels using rifle cartridge it's alittle harder to decide on just that right caliber. Here are the calibers that I've tried and liked...243, 270, 30-06, 8mm...For encore pistol I've leaning towards the 270 with 130gr even though I'd love to have this in the '06 caliber but I know the recoil ver the 270 cal. If you had a choice of the two, which cal would you consider????

I shoot 130's in my 30/06 15" Encore barrel.  Although I do not have a .270 pistol barrel I would suspect that the recoil will be the same or less than the .270 with the same weight bullet.  The 30/06 can be loaded for anything you want it to be.  With the rubber grip and forend you will see a big difference.

Something else that would help would be to have a trigger job done on your frame if it has not been done already.  I like the Encore frame with just under 3 lbs. and Contenders at about 1.75 lbs.

Thanks Tom....I know I can load over 200gr in the '06. The 270 max grain would 150. I have no idea 5 yrs from now what animal I might be shooting. I seen the encore pistol ( not sure what cal ) on TV...They took a back bear with it...Which hopefuly will be a hunt I'd like to go on in the near future...If I don't end up buying 4 pistol barrels in the mean time (laughing)

I don't buy TV, only watch the free stuff on the airways.  But this year I think I will put in for general and muzzleloader elk.  Would have put in for archery and muzzleloader as there is a better chance in the draw, but I think I would like to take one with the Encore 30/06 pistol barrel.

That is unless I find a 15" 35 Whelen barrel before then.  It's a bad habit, but I tend to try to obtain barrels to bracket the chamberings for the full range of possibilities.  The barrel collection keeps growing.

Yeah...These ENCORE and CONTENDER frames have away of doing that..
I think I've made up my mind. I'm going to purchase the '06. I'm pretty sure that I can be accurate with the recoil. Thanks for all your inputs!!!
