hunt hogs with a 357 mag?
« on: May 06, 2004, 05:23:21 PM »
anyone use a 357 mag for hogs? I have a Marlin 1894 lever gun and I was wondering if anyone uses this gun for pigs? I 'm not after "tropy hogs" but eaters--150lb or less.

I know there a better choices, but if I was out and it was all I had, should I pass on the shot ?? I usually use 158 grain jsp's factory ammo at 50 yards or less...

anyone use this caliber??

Dave

Dave,

Shoot em in the ear or anywhere behind the ear and in front of the shoulder and they will drop like a rock.

Lubbockdave
I would love to be able to do some pig hunting some where in that area. I had a chance to do some hunting in dickens county about three months ago but the wind was blowing 65 miles an hour, so it pretty well messed up the hunt, This was a one time deal but i sure would like to go down there. If you know any one there that don't charge a arm and leg i would like to know.   Good luck to ya Dave.......Joe..........

Lubbuckdave:  Last Sept. I killed a 290lb. hog at the farm and I used a 357 mag. pistol and wished I had more of a gun, all shots were in the heart lung area except one, I think out of a rifle you would be OK if you maintained disipline on shot placement and range. :D    JIM

IMHO
Shoot for the neck on hogs.
other game, I go for lung/heart, but if I have the chance at a neck shot on a hog I will take it all day long. They do drop. (be ready if it gets up).

Make sure it is dead with a knife in the heart.
Cheers,

The 357 works just fine on eating size hogs out to a 100yds or so out of a rifle. Use a soft point instead of a HP for better penetration. Hard cast 180's also work well. I use 18gr of lilgun to push a 158gr Rem SP to close an ave. of 1865 fps out of my marlin and have taken lots of deer and hogs with it. It will take them cleanly within it range limits.
