Powerbelt Questions
« on: May 07, 2004, 10:11:40 AM »
(1) Does a Powerbelt bullet itself engage the rifling, or only the plastic skirt?

(2) How tightly does the plastic skirt stick to the bullet after firing?  Is separation a problem?  What about before firing?

(3) Can you order the bullets and skirts separately (in bulk) as a way to save money?

(4) Is there only one manufacturer, or do CVA and Knight make their own Powerbelts?

(5) Are Powerbelts technically considered to be sabots or conicals?

Thanks in advance for your help.

(1) During loading, only the base. After firing, base + bullet.

(2) They are attached by the peg in the base. Holding one in your hand tells the tale. They separate quickly.

(3) Not that I am aware of.

(4) The are all made by Big Bore Express.

(5) They are fundamentally bore-sized conicals.

The bullet expands when fired so it's spun by the rifling?  The civil war conical bullets expanded like that, but they had a hollow base designed to expand.

So in a state like Montana where sabots are not allowed, would Powerbelts be legal?

All pure lead rifle projectiles shorten and belly outward when fired.

I'm not up on all regulations in all states, that seems to be ever-changing. Best bet is to go to the respective state's DNR. For Montana: http://fwp.state.mt.us/hunting/regulations.asp
