1-9"twist .223?
« on: May 08, 2004, 02:12:01 PM »
What grain bullets would be best for 1-9" twist in a .223(sorry to say but not an NEF)? Actually i have a choice of 1-8" or 1-9". If anybody has info for either or also which twist rate would be better i would greatly appreciate it.

From all I have read a 1 in 9 twist should work best with bullets from 55gr to 77gr.  I have heard of some rifles (AR's) that were accurate with 45gr as well but Savage reccomends a 55gr for their 223's with 1 in 9 twist.

:D  In my experience , you should be able to use weights from 50 to 70 grains in the 9" twist. My 8" AR shoots 52s just fine with varget.
Shoot straight , shoot often.

My Savage 1 in 8 shoots 40gr Vmaxs over H335 into 1/4-3/8" groups as long as I do my part.

You didn't tell us what you want to do with that rifle.     What is it going to do for you?

I'd go with 1 in 9" if the projectile you want to shoot will be stabilized by that twist.     It's probably more versatile in applicable .223 bullet weights and velocities unless you are doing something with the guys from www.long-range.com at Camp Perry this summer.

Once you get the rate of twist up there high enough, using the fastest loads with the lightest bullets in the .223 I'd expect the rotational velocity to possibly cause the bullet's jacket to come apart.    Then you'll really be disappointed!     I'd contact Sierra or Hornady about that one....

Good luck.

safetysherrif has a good point.  Some varmint bullets may not be up to the rotational speed of a 1 in 8 twist.  If your game is 600 to 1000 yd shooting then the 1 in 8 might be the ticket.

i'll be using the rifle for varmint/recreation shooting anywhere from 100-400 yards. I still like some of the light grain bullets. Which would hold up to a fast twist? I think i'm leaning towards the 1 in 9 twist. Also the barrel on this rifle is a full one inch thick, and 24" long will this help or hurt velocity/stability? The rifle is a BUSHMASTER varmint special a-3 flat top. Thanks for thr replies guys.

a 24" barrel on a .223 will give a 50 grain bullet a lot of velocity -- maybe 3350fps or so, but still much less than a 40 grain bullet.    The rotational velocity of the 50 may be (probably would be) slow enough out of a 1 in 9" bore to allow the bullet to hold together.     The 40 grain bullet might get 3600fps and with a 1 in 8" would possibly come apart.

I'd slow down the rotational velocity with a 1 in 9 twist and with a medium(?) weight bullet.

The one-inch thick barrel I see as a plus.....regarding potential stability.    The semi-automatic action of the rifle is what will probably most compromise its accuracy, since they are more loosely chambered and the bolts don't lock up as tightly.

Good luck.

Tight twist = heavy bullets ( 55+ ) .... my 223 is a 14 twist for no heavier than 55 gr. Your 9 will shoot heavier bullet wts well ( Less fps but more fp of energy, which isn't a bad way to fly - impact ).
