45/70? Whats the Largest Bullet
« on: May 09, 2004, 03:53:35 PM »
I've been using 405 gr. cast bullets, and Horn. 350 RN bullets in the 45/70 BC. They'll do the job, but I wanted to try some bigger bullets that might hold their range a bit more. I don't know what size the chamber will handle, and I'm too cheap to buy a box that I won't be able to use. Could anyone tell me what the largest size/ shape combo will work in these guns?

I know that Junior has done some work with the Lee 500 grainer in his 45-70 NEF. Last I remember, he was posting at accuratereloading.com using the handle "Junior 1942" on their cast bullet board.

My BC did not have much throat at all.  Iw would not allow me to load much over 2.55" COAL, so whatever bullet you use has to be stuffed into the case.

I have a 1.5 degree reamer going the rounds for those who want to seat heavy bullets out a bit more.

Email or PM me for more info.

Lee Loader!?!?!?!?

I have not bought a .45-70 Handi yet but plan to use a Lee Classic Loader. I was not aware that you could use cast bullets with it.

Does it change anything procedurally?

Thanks, Jeff

Using the Hornady 300 gr HP. I have been loading mine at 2.6 OAL. But it seems that there can be a lot of variation in these barrels.

Jeff, you have to get a case neck expander tool from lee to go with the Classic Loader. This is not the expander they make for a press, it's a small item that looks like a bullet. Put the nose in the case, tap it, and it expands the case mouth. Call Lee, they will ship it for $3 or $4 bucks.

Big Blue, what kind of range are you talking here, beyond 500, 600, 800 yards?

You may have to slug your bore to find the right dia.  Then grain weight can be determined because of barrel twist which should be 1:20 for the H&R handi-rifle 45-70 and the Buffalo Classic as well.  Go to http://www.neihandtools.com/catalog/index.html and on the side bar you will see select your bullet.  Click on .458 dia and then find the .458-520-PB which is a bore riding bullet.  This bullet was designed for range and many with 45-70's are shooting it out to 1,000 yards.

Of course they are not using modern scoped rifles to attain this range either.

Maybe this will help you, I don't know.
