blond phase black bears!
« on: May 11, 2004, 05:15:56 AM »
Hello fella's

Well I have been hunting my local hot spot the last couple of days and I have seen three blond phase black bears!  I know what your thinking and I am definitely seeing different animals.  The area is a remote logging road that was seeded with clover along the sides of the road and edges of clear cuts.  I pick 4kms stretches with nice shady corners and walk the road and glass the clear cuts.  The first bear I saw I thought was a grizzly because it was big and the color was a blond!  I observed this bear for about five minutes and it was definitely a gorgeous blond phase black bear and fairly big as well!  But as hunting goes the bear had other plans and didn't want to be my bear rug!  Unfortunately the wind wasn't good and he winded me and was gone in a flash!  Last night my wife and I got within a 20 metres of a smaller blond phase black bear feeding on the edge of the road.  This bear was much smaller and most likely a female so I decided against taking this bear with a much bigger one in the area!  Then on the same night as we where driving out another blond phase bear was in a field full of clover adjacent to a clear cut!  This was at least 10kms from the bear we had just seen and definitely was not the big one!  I am lucky to live in an area that has a variety of color phases but I have never seen so many in one night in the same area!

Good hunting to you all

McRae

mcrae555,

I for one believe every word of what you say.  I took a nice blond Black Bear in 1984 while hunting in Northern Idaho.  Makes a great trophy.  The one color phase of a Black Bear that I would like to get is a white one.  Not albino but white in color.  They are out there but very rare.  Let us know if you score on one OR better yet let me know if you need help!!.     Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

ratherbe,

I used to live in Vernon and hunted the Mabel/Sugar Lake area and have seen blonde, brown and even reddish phase black bears up in that part of the country.

Isn't hunting with kids fun?  lol  I was up in the San Juan Valley a couple of weeks ago hunting with my daughter.  We found a nice blackie but the distance was a bit out of her comfort range so we let it walk.  The excitement kids exude is great!   She's only 10 but hooked...
