4140 steel hollow bar
« on: May 11, 2004, 10:19:31 AM »
I posted a topic about 2 weeks ago on this page that i was in the procces of building a matchlock musket.  I posted that i was planning on having a bore of 5/8'' or 3/4'' but when i went to the local junkyard i stubled along a steel hollow bar.  This has a 3/8'' id or .40 caliber and a 3/8'' wall.  Now i was not going to buy it because of the small bore but then i found that it was not bored the rest of the way thorugh there is still about 2 inches of steel unbored.  This means i will not have to breach plug.  Now i just have to drill a vent hole the total length of hollow space is 42''.  Im thinking 30 grains of fffg.

triple fg might well be good for small bore long barrel.  Consider Double fg as well - lower pressure, slower/longer burning.
