Shot the FG Sunday.
« on: May 11, 2004, 03:59:21 PM »
Went to the range on Sunday and took some rifles with me.

Shot the FG using the Sierra 170gr. JHC. This rifle sure likes these bullets.
Shot a ten round group, 5 brass cases and 5 nickle plated cases.
The rifle put all ten shots into 3.3 inches at 100yds. using factory iron sights. The group was measured with dial calipers, outer edge to outer edge. My best group yet. Previously the best I had shot was 5-1/2 inches with ten shots.
I'm starting to get ANTSY to put a scope on this baby to see if it will group 1" MOA.
This rifle is a beauty to shoot, hold, and look at. And to think I did not even like lever actions till I found this one. Been leary of them since my father shot a hole in the car trunk about 20 years ago, right before we went into the woods with a Winchester 30-30.

I just put the initial cleaning on mine tonight.  Will load some ammo Wednesday and take it for a test run Friday.  Hope it shoots as good as yours, I waited long enough before I bought it.

That's some pretty good shooting, especially with iron sights!  Scope that bad boy and see what it's really capable of, it will also help with eliminating sighting errors when selecting a load.  What powder are you using?  Sierra 170's were what I used in my 7.5" Redhawk years ago, they would shoot into one-inch groups at 25 yards all day.  Back then, I thought all guns shot that good! :roll:

For actual group size, measure as you did, edge to edge, then subtract .410.   :wink:

If you can shoot home invaders, why can't you shoot Homeland Invaders?

papajohn;

The powder I'm using is H-110 with a Federal Std. Lrg. pistol primer. I know most reoaders think a MAGNUM primer should be used but I remember back in the 80's, the late Bob Milek once wrote that he got better consistency with std. primers over magnum primers. And for all these years it seems to hold true for me. Plus here in Alabama the temps don't get to much below freezing in the winter. Also I have a 5 page article from May, 1984 Shooting Times where Dick Metcalf where he did a 4000+ test on the 41mag with different bullets and powders, he also used standard primers.
Papajohn.... your right, that FG is begging for a scope, but doggone it, its the only rifle I have that does'nt have a scope on it, and its the only one I have that has WALNUT wood on it also. Decisions, decisions  :roll:

Thats very good groups for iron sights. My eyes are 44 years old and not capable of shooting well without a scope. I can manage a peep pretty well but notch shooting is too tough for me.
 Have you tried the Hornady 210 gr xtp's.

RV;

Haven't tried Hornady XTP's in the FG, but use them alot in my Model 657 w/ a 7-1/2" barrel. They ARE very accurate out of that revolver.  Strange that I shoot a heavier bullet out of the pistol than I do the rifle, but I guess that's handloading for ya.  :roll:

What factory load did you shoot that doe out of your pistol this past season?

The Hornady XTP's shoot very good out of my Contender and I like what I was seeing last week with my FG, but I have not got serious in shooting the FG yet.  The XTP's have always done very good on deer for me.
